Huge 7'2" Center Commits to ASU
Jordan Bachynski, who went to high school in Calgary, Alberta and is serving on a mission in Miami, Fla. committed to ASU Head Coach Herb Sendek on Tuesday morning.
The 7-2 245 Bachynski is considered one of the up and coming young talents in Canada. He committed to UNLV prior to his mission and re-opened his recruitment while in Miami. Connecticut, Oregon State, BYU and San Diego visited the center with Arizona State last Wednesday.
Big time get for Herb and ASU. Nice class of King, Hawkins, Bachynski with more to come.

Jordan was supposed to attend Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada for his final year, but he hurt his ankle prior to leaving and did not transfer. He then went on his mission.

Did somebody not qualify or is Herb going to run somebody (I'd assume Rhode or Hawkins) off? There is a scholarship limit you know.

There are other options as well. For instance, a player could elect to pay their own way instead of receiving their scholarship.

Which is what Glasser is doing (McMillan could do so as well). Couple that with Kraidon Woods transfering, adding Bachynski, and we now have one scholie left in 2010. ASU still has two good prospects (Desrosiers and Gary Franklin) that are expected to verbal so things will get interesting.
Not worried as it's a good problem to have. We needed 2 big men in this class so Bachynski is a welcomed surprise

Glasser's not on scholi? Thought was the reason he came to ASU as they offered him one when USC only offered a walk-on?

Where are you getting that info about Glasser? He's definitely been on scholarship the last few years, though he certainly comes from a family that could afford to pay his way for his Senior year. Jamelle McMillans Dad could also probably afford the tuition at ASU as well if Sendek could convince one or either of them to give up their scholis because he's got some big time recruits coming in.
I don't know how I feel about this signing since I can't seem to find any info on the guy. Its nice to get some size, but I hope he's not some stiff/project. Desroisers was in Tempe recently, maybe Herb realized ASU doesn't have a shot with him and thats why he signed this big guy instead. I was really hoping ASUs 4 man class would be Hawkins, King, Desroisers and Tony Mitchell.
Also Mao, you've brought up running off Hawkins a lot and while I suppose its a possibility Cory has a younger brother (Devon I believe it is) who's apparently got even more upside than Cory, so Im not sure Herb would want to burn bridges with that family.

He definitely wasn't on scholarship last season. I can't recall who he gave it up for but it was mentioned numerous times throughout the season during game telecasts.
Bachynski's commitment won't affect Desrosiers status. In fact, Desrosier knew about Bachynski's intentions while on his official visit in Tempe last weekend and still left impressed (ASU made his final 2 with Wake). It's widely assumed that Des wants to play the 4 anyways which Bachynski clearly won't.
King's commitment also doesn't seem to be affecting the decision of Franklin. Franklin is going to visit Baylor but many believe ASU still leads.

It was and the USC walk-on dilemna was well documented. However, he gave it up last season for the sake of the team.
I'm sure he let the scholie go once he secured an established role on the team and also the fact that it would help the team be more competitive if he paid his own way

I really don't mean to be rude, but do you have any source for this Glasser not being on scholi thing? I've never heard that, but then I was at most games so I didn't see the telecasts.

We should know soon about Desrosiers. Franklin already had his visit to Baylor last weekend and still no word from him. In regards to Tony Mitchell, there is some issues that he is dealing with and if ASU gets the commits that they want, I don't believe that they will wait around to see if those issues get cleared up.

Mitchell's all but out of the picture. People can also put the Leslie fantasy to sleep as well.
Desrosier and Franklin are it

Why would Glasser give up his scholarship last season for the sake of the team? We weren't even close to being at the scholarship limit last season, and this year including Glasser we only have 12 players on scholarship, the limit is 13.

I'd dump Hawkins with Franklin (he's almost a lock for ASU btw) on board. One would only assume this unnamed player who's going to shell out 25k in scholarship money to play at ASU would be McMillan, but I'm not sure why he'd give that up to have his playing time significantly reduced.

That's because Hawkins is a decent prospect at best who's likely to get almost no playing time with ASU's current roster. And every college coach tries to run off guys who aren't going to play - see Kraidon Woods, Christian Polk, countless UA players over the last few years - as they need those scholarships mostly for situations like this. At this point it's pretty easy to see that moving forward without Hawkins is probably best for ASU. He'd probably end up at a MWC school or something, it's not like Arizona or UCLA is going to scoop him up and cause ASU nightmares or anything.
