Blame the Rose Bowl for taking Illinois and the Washington receiver for dropping the touchdown pass at the end of the Hawaii game. The Fiesta Bowl really had no choice.

Again, for the fifth time - the Rose Bowl was not going to select two Pac 10 teams.
Blame ASU for getting blown out against the only two tough teams they played...

Game vs. Oregon wasn't really a blowout, just a loss...... and the Rose Bowl could've picked better teams than both ASU and Illinois. I didn't understand what you said before, but didn't they have the first pick after losing Ohio State?

The Rose Bowl should have selected Georgia to play USC. Neither the Sugar or Fiesta would have selected Illinois, thus ASU would have probably gotten in then.

I don't think anyone ever expected the Rose Bowl to take two Pac 10 teams, its that by taking Illinois they took the last BCS at large spot that ASU had a chance at.
There are only 4 at large spots and Hawaii got one of them, Georgia was a virtual lock for a second and with 3 teams in the top 8, the Big 12 was going to get another. That left one at large spot left. The Rose Bowl filled it with Illinois.
If the Rose Bowl would have selected Kansas or Hawaii instead of Illinois, ASU would be playing in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Rose Bowl never had a shot at Georgia. Because it lost LSU, the Sugar Bowl has rights to the SEC, so the Rose Bowl could have only got Georgia if the Sugar Bowl didn't want them and that wasn't going to happen.

So that left the Rose Bowl to
A) Pick Illinois, keep the tradition alive or
B) Pick Hawaii
Kansas or Missouri was not an option - backroom deals among the bowls took care of that - the Orange Bowl wanted Kansas - how many ASU fans would really travel to Miami??? 5,000?? As opposed to the whole freaking state of Kansas.
