I work at ASU and I can tell you that this is one of the negative things that Michael Crow has brought to the university.....if a program isn't self sustaining or grabbing national headlines-it gets cut, even if it's prestigious.
I'm not to trying to bash the man, because he definitely has improved the image of ASU and things actually get fixed on campus, but I'd be lying if I said that I don't worry about losing my job sometimes. I can't believe that of all of the programs, ASU Wrestling got cut. Horrible decision IMO.

This is terrible. Where is it written that any program a school offers has to make money.
I guess they need the money to renovate SDS again or build another Engineering Building.
Good thing they stopped asking me to give them anymore money.

i can honestly say after living out here 5 years today was the first time i've heard ASU and wrestling in the same sentance
this is the reality of collegiate sports today - i'm sure it will stick around as a club for those who want to participate

Schools like ASU and UA simply can't afford to fire and hire basketball and football coaches in the same calendar year while keeping up in the arms races without there being repercussions somewhere down the line. This isn't Austin or Columbus, there's no money trees growing outside Tempe or Tucson and the check finally came. It will come in Tucson too rather shortly, I wouldn't be surprised if Arizona switched up the coaching staffs of the AD's two breadwinners in the next year.

ASU at one time was near Iowa in terms of dominance. It's not like the program was dogging it....

Dear Wrestling Supporters,
Please forgive me for not responding to you personally. We are very excited to be able to make the announcement below. The wrestling community has been great and as you can imagine we have received many emails. We have been working to reinstate the program around the clock it seems and I felt it would be better served for me to work on getting the program reinstated versus responding to emails at that point.
I am happy to meet, talk or visit with you or anyone that would like to help ASU Wrestling financially in any way possible. The size of the gift does not matter. Wrestling has many loyal supporters, anything that you can give to help ASU Wrestling is important.
Again, Thank you for your support of Wrestling, ASU Wrestling and Kids across the country that desire and deserve an opportunity. GO Devils. SP

Financial Support From Local Civic Leadership Secures ASU Wrestling
ASU Reinstates Wrestling Program As 21st Varsity Sport The Sun Devils will compete fully in 2008-09
TEMPE, Ariz.‹Arizona State University Vice President for Athletics Lisa Love announced Friday that the athletic department is fully reinstating the sport of varsity wrestling, effective immediately, due to financial support from local civic leadership. The reinstatement of wrestling gives ASU 21 sports in its varsity athletic program.
³It is with great pleasure that I announce the reinstatement of the varsity sport of wrestling at ASU,² says Love. ³The wrestling community, both locally and nationally, accepted this as a challenge to do something wonderful for the sport. ASU is forever grateful for that passion and unwavering support. Something special is happening on our campus thanks to civic leadership that cares deeply about ASU wrestling.²
ASU had announced on May 13, 2008 that it was discontinuing the sport of wrestling due to the rising cost of operating a 22-sport varsity program.
It was determined at that time that sponsoring a 20-sport program would better fit ASU¹s athletic financial profile. Love indicated at the time that if the wrestling community were able to raise enough financial support the sport could be reinstated. That commitment is there and the sport will continue at Arizona State.
Love said that fundraising for the sport of wrestling will be an ongoing process. The objective is not just to sponsor wrestling as a varsity sport, but to position the sport as one of the top programs in the country.
The Sun Devil wrestling team is a member of the Pacific-10 Conference.

Another meaningless sport that really never deserved funding by a public tax-payer supported school because it hemmorhages (spelling?) money.
If private donors wish to support it, good for them. Lisa Love did the right thing.
