Video Game-A-Day #16: Baseball Stars (NES)

OK, I will start my week off with quite possibly my favorite video game of all time; SNK's NES game, Baseball Stars. This game came out in 1989 after making an appearance as both a NEO GEO and arcade game. The graphics were very stripped down compared to the other ports, but the gameplay in Baseball Stars was the best. My neighbor got this game for his birthday and I borrowed it for months at a time.

Since it had a battery, like Legend of Zelda, you could create custom leagues and, more importantly, custom teams. Being 14 years old and the biggest Cubs fan at the time, I created my first custom team based on the 1990 Cubs. Me, Andre Dawson, Ryno and Mark Grace must have played hundreds of games. Another custom team I made was made up of characters from a then new TV show: The Simpsons. All I remember is I built a player called Bart and would power up his attributes after every win. By the end, he would homer in about 60% of the time. Good times.

I have probably played 20 baseball games since and Baseball Stars is still my favorite and most playable. Not sure if the game is really that good, or if it holds a special place in my video game heart.

It was the first game that I could remember that kept track of statistics. Statistics is what makes sports games fun for me.

I downloaded this game after your recommendation, but am having trouble. All of the infielders and outfielders have feet of stone.

Well, when you first start out, most players' fielding attributes are very, very low. Once you power those up, it should be much better. I'll fire up my NES emulator tonight and see what's what.

Great, great game. Loved buying players/stats and creating a new team.

Ken Griffey Baseball was my favorite baseball, followed by Baseball Stars 2 for the Neo Geo. This is a close 3rd though.
