Stupid Playstation question?

Are you able to save PS1 games on a PS2 memory card? If not, is a PS1 card compatible with PS2?

It is based on the game I think. PS2 will take PS1 cards but PS1 cards back up PS1 games while PS2 cards back up PS2 games.
