Randy Johnson - Surgery and gone for a long time!
Arthroscopic surgery scheduled for tomorrow to clean out the knee. He'll be gone a minimum of 3 to 6 weeks, and likely longer.

Not a shock. Once he started having the problems even I knew this was going to be a longer term problem. Hopefully it will be closer to 3 weeks. The Dbacks missed a good opportunity last night to pick up a game with the Cubs win. These things are going to become more important.

It's a good thing we just gave him that monster contract extension. I really hope this isn't a problem, but sooner or later age had to catch up with him. Hopefully he'll bounce back after the surgery and be the Randy we know down the stretch, but this certainly doesn't breed optimisim about his future now does it?

I disagree. He isn't having arm problems, it's his knee. Just as many young players need their knee scoped as older players. He'll be ok.

Just a thought: didn't RJ change his mechanics a bit to get more velocity? It may have caused different stresses on his landing knee.

I was wondering how it got injured myself. It wasn't a nagging (by nagging I mean a year long deal) thing which means it must have happened recently. I thought I remember reading he had tweaked his mechanics but cannot be certain.
Surgery had to be done so he didn;t hurt other body parts trying to compensate. Having had 5 scopes on my knees, it really isn;t a huge deal. The key will be how well he recovers and rehabs...obviously.

I believe the change in mechanics was to relieve stress on his back, but this could have contributed to his knee.

Johnson's Had trouble Before With this Knee
"It shows, No. 1, a lot of fluid in the knee, which we already know," Lee said. "The second thing it shows are some small, cartilaginous pieces - basically some small, loose bodies that have fragmented off a little bit and are probably causing the irritation."
Lee found no evidence of ligament damage or problems with the meniscus cartilage, but discovered one area that he said would require evaluation during the procedure.
He said the debris could stem from a knee operation performed after the 1991 season, when Johnson was with Seattle. It involved a patellar shaving to remove a rough area on the back of the kneecap.
