ESPNews is saying that this deal may have been done.

Interesting deal for everyone involved

Bad, bad trade for the White Sox IMO

I don't think so. I'm guessing the cash basically makes Contreras free and he's just as mediocre as Loaiza. Loaiza would not have been re-signed anyway so it gives the Sox more flexibility to sign Magglio. Works well for both teams.

I didn't know Loaiza was a FA. So it makes more sense (although I still think Loaiza is a better pitcher than Contreras)

I heard it's a four team deal:

Minnesota:
Derek Lowe

Cubs:
Nomar

Red Sox:
Doug Mientchavitch (Sp)
Orlando Cabrera
Matt Clement

Expos get:
Top prospects
Alex Gonzalez

Clement and Lowe weren't in the deal. If they can re-sign Nomar this is one hell of a deal for the Cubs

You guys are right and my bad for believing internet BS. Apparently the Cubs gave up some pretty big prospects as opposed to Clement. I like what the Red Sox did more than the Cubs. Defense is that team's biggest problem and by adding Cabrera, Mientkhevich, and Dave Roberts they got much, much better. They'll still score plenty of runs without Nomar, who had become a burden.

I think it was a good trade for both the Cubs and Red Sox. Like you said they needed defense and got 2 good defenders (and still have plenty of good bats in the lineup). Nomar was a distraction since basically in a depression ever since news of him being involved in the A-Rod deal came out.

However, I expect that since he was traded Nomar will bounce back for the rest of the year. The Cubs needed offensive help desperately.

The main difference between the two trades if you ask me is that the Red Sox addressed their biggest problem, which was their defense. The Cubs have neglected to remove their biggest wart, which is their awful bullpen. LaTroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth isn't going to cut it and if Cubs fans are holding out hope for Ryan Dempster, they're more delusional than I previously thought.

With Mark Prior's health in question, maybe they should move him to the bull pen the rest of the year??

I don't know of very much bullpen help being tossed around in trade talks so the Cubs worked with what they could and seriously upgraded their offense at SS (Alex Gonzalez is AWFUL)...and probably their defense too.

Closer is going to be an issue but the improved offesne will hopefully give the bullpen some added cushion. Hawkins and Farnsworth can be unhittable at times but they can also be fuel to fire other times. They did improve their bullpen depth by bringing Leicester back up (why he was ever sent down is beyond most Cubs fans).

I like this deal and the Cubs, while giving up some prospects still find their pitching prospect pool deep in the minors. Clement wasn't part of the deal but I am betting this is Clement's last year in Chicago's North Side
