Your 10 Favorite Guitar Solos?
I'm suffering from major insomnia yet again, and since I havent done an ASFN Jam Band poll in quite awhile (will post one before the week is over) I figured I'd pose this question in the meantime....
Anyways, what's your 10 favorite guitar solos of all-time? It doesnt necessarily have to be listed in any order.... Here are 10 of my faves that I can think of at the moment...
1) Jeff Beck- "Shapes of Things"
2) Pete Townshend - "Love, Reign O'er Me"
3) David Gilmour - "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"
4) Eric Clapton - "Presence of the Lord"
5) Eddie Van Halen - "Eruption"
6) Jimi Hendrix - "Wind Cries Mary"
7) Collins/Rossington - "Free Bird"
8) Slash - "November Rain"
9) Jimmy Page - "In My Time Of Dying"
10) Robbie Krieger - "Light My Fire"
What are yours?

Oh my God, this is a tough one, I'll have to give it some thought, but my ONE favorite solo is Slash's solo in "Sweet Child O' Mine."

A few of of my favorites:
Gilmour - "Comfortably Numb"
Don Felder (later joined by Joe Walsh at the end) - "Hotel California"
Jeff Watson & Brad Gillis (Nightranger - lousy band, but great solo) - "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" (plus, I won an air guitar contest in H.S. with this song. LOL!)
Virtually every solo Randy Rhodes takes on "Tribute" (they're all amazing)
SRV - "Tightrope", "Crossfire", "Voodoo Chile" (and all the rest too. SRV is mind-blowing)
Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) - "Die With Your Boots On"
That's it for now...gotta get back to work.

Work? You've got to set your priorities straight.

Any note played by Joe Satriani
Any note played by Steve Vai
Star Spangled Banner by Jimi
Any note played by Stevie Ray Vaughn
Any note by Buddy Guy
These guy could hit a single note on their guitars and still be better than 99% of the guitar players out there. String a bunch on notes together and this group hase even fewer peers.

Hey AZCB34,
Ever listen to Roy Buchanan??? He was definately in league with the guys on your list, except that he preceded most of them.
Best guitar solo - Roy Buchanan's - "Messiah"

I haven't listened to him but a buddy of mine back in Chicago constantly raves about the guy's music. I will have to check out some of his stuff. Just hit his website and they had an audio clip that was solid.
I have really just immersed myself into the blues alot more (always a fan but never really passionate about it)and I am always on the lookout for suggestions/recommendations in the blues arena.

1. Van Halen - Eruption
2. Van Halen - Hot for Teacher
3. George Lynch, Dokken - In my Dreams
4. Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
5. Warren DeMartini, Ratt - Lay it Down
6. Warren DeMartini, Ratt - You're in Love
7. Randy Rhoades, Ozzy Osborne - Crazy Train
8. Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
9. (forget his name) White Lion - Wait
10. Anything Stevie Ray Vaughn has played.
Stupidest guitar solo of all time belongs to CC Deville of Poison for "Talk Dirty to Me"...."...CC, pick up that guitar and...TALK to me!"
My life would have been just fine if Poison never came along.

I've thought of others who deserve recognition...
1) Joe Satriani (especially on his Live In San Francisco c.d.)
2) Mick Ronson (any David Bowie track he had a solo on)
3) Vernon Reid - "Cult of Personality"
4) anything by Tony Iommi (vastly underrated)
5) Kim Thayil - "Black Hole Sun"
6) Mike McCready - "Alive"
7) Joe Perry - "Mama Kin"
8) Jerry Cantrell - "No Excuses"
9) Zakk Wylde - "I Don't Want To Change The World"
10) Jimmie Vaughan (obviously not as good as his brother, but still impressive)

Satriani is sick on the CD. That just blows me away every time I listen to it. His last few studio CDs have been disappointments to me a bit. The interesting thing is the tune "Borg Sex" on the Live in SF CD rocks the house but the studio version of that tune makes me want to puke (in fact that entire album it is on is disappointing).
I was going to say Vernon Reid too. He is maybe one of the more under-appreciated guitarists out there IMO. I thought Living Colour was solid.

Yeah, I agree about Satriani's live material compared to him in the studio.... It seems that Satriani seems rather synthetic in the studio and allows his session-man to dominate most of his albums, however, he's obviously not constricted live and he flourishes whenever he is free to improvise....
Living Colour was solid up, but unfortunately their last couple albums havent received much attention. I saw them open for the Rolling Stones during the Steel Wheels tour (circa '89) at the Pontiac Silverdome and they blew me away despite that their sound system was substandard.....

Ok this is somewhat but; an excellent performance of guitar virtuosity is the title: Friday Night in San Francisco.
It features John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, and Paco DeLucia <sp>. Three acoustic guitars, live recording, that's it. It is amazingly awesome!!!
