I was not real familiar w/ DP before this and to tell you the truth, haven't followed them that much since this album, but this album just rocked my world. The intro to PS song is un-freaking-believeable.
Knocking at Your Back Door is also an awesome song.
I was a sophomore in High School when this came out and when I hear songs from that album I just remeber all of the fun times - river tripping, partying, sports, etc.
One of my all time favorites!

Ah, Perfect Strangers. The one where Balki wanted to open a Mepos hot dog stand in Larry's apartment was classic!

Great song, great album. Dream Theater covers this song from time to time, and it's fun to hear them use a 7 string guitar on it. There's a recording floating out there of them playing Perfect Strangers live at the BBC with Bruce Dickenson of Iron Maiden singing. Deep Purple is a fantastic band, and if I'd been alive in the 70s they'd probably have been my favorite band back then.
Deep Purple Getting Ready For Big Summer

U.K. heavy rock titans Deep Purple recently took a break the band, while gearing up for the follow-up to their popular 2003 album, Bananas. Vocalist Ian Gillan has been particularly busy, having just ended a trip to Toronto and Buffalo to record a tribute album to himself, so to speak — an album of re-recordings of songs meant to celebrate "40 years on the road."
As well, Ian's got a documentary of his life in the pipes, a book of musings, a political tome ("that needs a couple more years") and a spot on the soundtrack to the Rock School documentary, on which he belts out a song you might have heard of called "Smoke On The Water." Most importantly, a new Deep Purple record is in the plans.
"Yes, we're off to L.A. to work with Michael Bradford on the first writing session for the next album," says Gillan. "So that will be, they say, the end of March, but realistically I think it's going to be April Fool's Day."
Gillan has nothing but praise for Bradford.
"He's done a wonderful job with Deep Purple," says Gillan. "I think everyone feels comfortable with him. Having gone through that, I think it's going to be easier next time. It's always a question of trust, when you place your collective sound, and future, in someone else's hands.
"We're thrilled with Bananas. It's the best record... if you speak to anyone in the band, they'll tell you it's the best record we'd made all-around, for a very long time. Worldwide, it's the biggest selling record we'd had too, since Perfect Strangers."
They may consider themselves in good hands, but the Purple people aren't yet ready to reveal what'll be on the new album.
"No, we never talk about that — we just turn up and play," says Gillan. "We're not that kind of band."
And don't expect to hear the leftovers from the Banana sessions getting unearthed.
"I would think there are around a half a dozen tracks, maybe more," says Gillan, with respect to the possibility of using unreleased songs from the Bananas sessions. "But you know, the fact that they didn't get used on the last one makes me think they probably won't get used on this one. There's no point going back to things, I don't think. If we ditched them, or they were second rate then, they probably still are. That's the annoying thing about things emerging in later years from recording studios and old management companies. They put out stuff that you rejected; that's not very nice."
Deep Purple's Canadian tour dates:
* June 18 Toronto, ON @ Molson Amphitheatre
* June 19 Ottawa, ON @ Corel Centre
* June 20 London, ON @ John Labatt Centre
"Bananas" is a good come back album. They stay very true to their sound. Of course it isn't the original line-up, Blackmore is doing alot with his wife, musically you guys. But it's good to hear a band come back and stay true.
There are some greta DP albums out there.
Their greates is a cool one with Kentucky Woman and the like, kinda marching through their history of musical accomplishments from the gate.

I have a solo effort by him. An excellent piece of work. He does songs that have a flovor of certain bands that influenced him but aren't copies. Terrific concept. One of my favorite albums of now.

Interesting, I'd like to check it out. what is the name of it?
I've been fortunate enough to do lighting for Steve a number of times and he has always impressed me. A very talented indivigual and a genuine nice guy.
I remember seeing Deep Purple on tour for that album. It was at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Great show, great album, great band.

I actually worked that show as a production assistant.
Good job!
