What bands are the all time sell outs in your mind? Define "Sell Out" any way you wish, my personal definition is: 'sl out' to deviate towards your original sound to stay with mainstream, to do whatever it takes for money (greatest hits album*, or a live album) , only new material is for movie sound tracks, or just put out one really crappy album after another after a string of hits (yeah, thanks Metallica)
*its cool to do a Greatest Hits album if you haven't put something out for over a decade, or you are adding remixes or new material
Pearl Jam - sold out 1998, yeah that live album was great Metallica - Nothing after the Black Album was worth is, I really knew when they released "Unforgiven II" WTF???? Nirvana - Yeah, they sold out after Kurt died, god rest his soul and what they did to him, like 5 live albums and 1 or 2 unreleased songs Gin Blossoms - you bastards hate each other, why do you keep doing this make up, break up crap? Creed - Never liked 'em, but I was convinced when I saw the lead singer on the Jesus channel with Deion Sanders Any Boy Band - You can't even write your own friggen music but you drive a friggen Lincolin Navigator? Hope Hell is nice you jerks ...and screw you guys when you do your solo stuff, you know what I'm talkin bout Justin Timberlake Dave Matthews Band - Never saw it coming until they release TWO live albums in 3 years, may god have mercy on your souls Foo Fighters - All your songs sound the same, lame-o

Without a doubt, the band that most defines "sell-out" to me is Sugar Ray...
If anyone ever heard their 1st 2 albums, they actually combined some heavy-punk/thrashing metal with techno/rap, but that all since changed when "Fly" became their "break-thru cross-over hit"....Now, all they perform is "sappy top 40 pop"....

Dude, everytime I hear that song I want to go on a 3 state killing spree....

Yeah, I agree... When "Fly" and Smash Mouth's "Walking On The Sun" were released (I believe in the early summer of '97), they both received too much over-exposure....
In fact, a friend of mine and I have always had a running joke regarding both Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth...Doesn't their songs virtually sound the same if as though both bands share "interchangable" personnel? I mean...Sugar Ray does
"Every Morning" and Smash Mouth immediately "When The Morning Comes"....Or even with "Fly" Smash Mouth does "Walking On The Sun"...Sorry if Im not making any sense on my babbling here.....
But if you ever listened to Sugar Ray's first 2 albums, you'd be amazed that's the same band that has released the most agonizing songs over the past couple years...
How about some other "sell-outs"?
For now, I'll just name REM as another....They had a core-cult following with very political lyrics, then they suddenly released "Monster" and it hasnt been the same since for them...Just completely downhill...Guess theyre trying to remain current w/today's sound..... At least Red Hot Chili Peppers havent lost their identity over that same period of time...
Dude, Red Hot Chili Peppers was sitting on the fence...but Californiacation was a great album so they saved themselves
True...I believe the reason they went somewhat downhill on "One Hot Minute" because they were focusing on writing songs more that better suited
Dave Navarro's style, but it was still a better album than any later material done by REM.... If John Fruscinate didn't return back into the picture, I personally believe that RHCP would have broken-up...."Californiacation" reminded me of
"Blood Sugar Sex Magik" and I didn't think that RHCP would follow-up "Californiacaction" with anything as solid, but proved me wrong w/"By The Way"..
Speaking of "sell-outs"....How about KISS? I never got into their later stuff whatsoever...They should have never removed their make-up, like Bob Dylan should never have gone electric....

Call me crazy, but I liked most of "One Hot Minute." The song Pea is funny. My college baseball team would get drunk and sing that song at parties!

I should have said..."went downhill" by their own standards....
I have wonderful memories of getting drunk to "Aeroplane" and "My Friends" was wonderful.... Then a few years later, I couldnt stop listening to the final 5-tracks on there, especially "Falling Into Grace" and "Tearjerker"....

I also like the "wah wah" sound on the song Walkabout.

I saw RHCP at AWA during the support tour of One Hot Minute. The Toadies were opening for them (wow this must have been 5-7 years ago)..anyways. Like half of the people sitting in my section came just to see the Toadies, when they were done with their set everybody just got up and left....we had rows and rows of seats alone...sweat

I loved "Possum Kingdom" by the Toadies...Whenever I watched that video, I could never tell whether or not their bassist was male or female and still can't to this very day.....

I just checked on the 'net and it turns out to be a female....Wow....Didn't know until now....
Anyways, going back to sell-outs, does anyone classify Meat Puppets as one? I know they made a comeback because of Nirvana's "Unplugged", but it seemed they broke away from the sound that made them develop their earlier cult following....

Good one! Weren't they from Arizona?! Could have sworn I saw them open for Reverend Horton Heat or Gin Blossoms
