One of the greatest albums of all time, followed by countless ripoffs and really defined an entire genre of music--"dance-new age".
For those that don't know, Enigma is actually a singer/songwriter named Michael Cretu, who has done a lot of stuff in the past including producing his wife, Sandra's music in Europe (she's pretty big there), and being part of a project called TAAW, which were basically electronic remixes of television themes.
For this album, Sadeness was a huge hit and instantly recognizable. Monks chanting over modern beast caught on like wild fire, and even because of this, several albums of just monks chanting were released and sold very well.
Personally, Enigma is my favorite musical act--he has 5 albums, a greatest hits and an album of dance remixes. All 5 albums are brilliant, and brilliantly different as well. The first is very medieval, the second much more Southeast Asian, the third is almost exclusively vocal, the fourth is centered around a single piece of music (Carl Orff's Carmina Burana), and the fifth is much more of a modern album. It is a terrific catalog and well recommended.
But for anyone that hasn't heard Enigma, or at least, hasn't heard anything for a long time (outside of Return to Innocence, from the second album), then this particular album is certainly a terrific place to start.
