Album-a-Day #113: A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms (2000)

Band: A Perfect Circle

Website: http://www.aperfectcircle.com
Album: Mer de Noms
Year Released: 2000
No. of Discs: 1
No. of Tracks: 12

Track Listing:

01. The Hollow
02. Magdalena
03. Rose
04. Judith
05. Orestes
06. 3 Libras
07. Sleeping Beauty
08. Thomas
09. Renholdėr
10. Thinking of You
11. Breńa
12. Over

Being a huge Tool fan, I naturally picked this cd up when it came out five years ago. It did take a while to grow on me. While probably more accessible than any Tool record, Mer de Noms is not your typical mainstream rock record, nor would you expect one knowing that Maynard James Keenan was involved. Lyrically, the album is on par with any Tool record, quietly disturbing, thought-provoking. A Perfect Circle seem like a perfect complement to Tool, and with the latter's records coming out on an average of one every half-a-decade, APC is more than adequate to help pass the time while we wait... and wait...

Great CD! Sleeping Beatuy and Thinking of You are probably my two favorite songs on the CD.

Just don't buy this CD at Wal-Mart. The lyrics "FREEEEEEK YOUR GOD" just sound stupid in Judith. I learned that lyrics were edited and have never bought a CD from there since.

My fiance and I love that album. 3 Libras is actually our song together. Interesting because we're actually 2 Geminis

It's been five years?!?! It seems like this came out two years ago.

I have been fortunate to see APC twice, once in support of this album and once in support of Thirteenth Step. Oddly enough, I saw both shows at the Joint in the Hard Rock Vegas.

Their live show is great.

Welcome back to the forum Jim O... please dont be a stranger.....

Yeah... I'm shocked as well that it already has been 5 yrs since the album's release..... Quite frankly... 2000-2001 was period that last solid year of music.. since most has been on the vast decline....

My favorite tracks are "3 Libras" and "Judith"..... I completely agree with you (Griffin) on what an excellent complement that A Perfect Circle is to Tool... It seems that Maynard isnt as dark... in fact...more tranquile on most of the tracks......

Here's an interesting thought/question for all:

What if for some reason Maynard was forced to concentrate on strictly just one of the bands/projects...Which out of the 2 would you want for him to choose? I know most would say Tool, however, it's really a complex decision for me since I love A Perfect Circle just about as much as I do Tool......

A Perfect Circle. No question. Their music is hands-down better than Tool IMO.
