Who're your favorite authors?

I can sit down and read just about any genre. Or just about any kind of book for that matter. In college I was turned on to graphic novels (in a sense, comic books). I enjoy arguing the finer points of these books with literary snobs who refuse to appreciate anything w/ pictures. The Preacher series or anything by Alan Moore is absolutely mindblowing. Frank Miller's work as well as Neil Gaiman's can stand up to anything in print.

For novels, I think my faves are Andrew Vachss and Louise Erdrich. Andrew Vachss's novels are hard-boiled mysteries, each of which has the protagonist investigating child abuse and exploitation. Vachss's writing style is both beautiful and raw all at the same time. His dialogue is great, and his characters are the most original I've ever encountered on the page.

Louise Erdrich shares Vachss's potent imagery but that's about it. Her work centers on the Souix (sp) people of the Dakotas. Her writing is some of the most beautiful prose I've ever read, period.

And then of course, I can't get enough of Stephen King's work. His earlier stuff is the best, but "Bag of Bones" is pretty awesome as well. Can't wait to see how the Gunslinger series wraps. I read some other horror but too much of it is recycled pulp.

Who are some of your faves?

If I had to choose one, it would have to be Shakespeare. Jane Austin, Nate Hawthorne, E.A. Poe, Francis Shaeffer, C.S. Lewis are some of the others I enjoy reading.

As far as poetry goes, Emily Dickinson, Poe, Whittier, Whitman, Longfellow.

Personally I am not a big book reader, I read so much daily just working, that it does not give me that relaxing feeling I am sure many of you get, but over the years, I have read many different authors, but I still think my favorite is Stephen King. All I know is, I am glad he never told me bedtime stories as a kid!! LOL

Fisherski, did you just come up with all those authors off the top of your head?

Or do you carry a list around with you?

Forgotten Authors?

Anyone here ever read any books by Eric Van Lustbader? Michner is also a pretty good read. Noone mentioned these two, or Grisham, or James Clavell, either.

Oh, DbacKJohn mentioned he likes Michner. I actually read Centennial TWICE! I admit, parts of that book brought tears to my eyes!

James Mitchner is probably my all time favorite author. The historical research he does is fantastic - he really gives you a feel for what life was like for the subjects of his novels.

I have read Centennial numerous times. Other favorites include Hawaii, The Drifters, Caravans and Texas.

Grisham I like - there was a time when I had read everything he put out, then I slacked off.

Mitchner I've never of but I do like historical fiction - is that what he writes?

Yes - Mitchner writes very detailed/researched historical fiction. His books revolve around one theme/location. For example, in "Centennial", Mitchner traces the history of one area of Colorado, thru pre-historic times, Native Americans, coming of the mountain men, ranchers, farmers etc, tying it all together nicely.

Go easy with those big, heavy words my friend. People might find that orchidaceous.

Oh, I'm sorry, that might be on syllable bigger than your used to. It means basically the same thing though - that should save you the trouble of having to look it up. Wouldn't want you to wear yourself out by first having to read it and then figure out what it means.

Ugh - wise guy...

btw - welcome to the board.
