Any fans of the "Wheel of Time" series know this is a sad day but one that was coming due to his illness.
According to www.wotmania.com Jordan had outlined the final book of the series on audio tapes and there is an "army" of writers working to put together the final book and it still will be published.
Sad day.

Around Book 6 when some of the Forsaken started coming back from the dead I knew that RJ wouldn't finish the series. He wasn't a young guy when this started.

He was 59! That's really not old. Correction...had he made it to his birthday he would have turned 59. He was only 58.

I almost responded with that when I first read his post, but I think he was saying the guy started the series at age 41 and 6 books in it was obvious that this was going to be a LOOOONNNNGGGG series. I don't think it was plotted out as a certain number of books in the beginning, so one could wonder as they were reading a more and more complex storyline - "Will the author live to finish this series?"
Gotcha. He was younger than my dad & older than my mom...their mortality has been haunting me lately, so I get defensive at the thought of them being "old". Silly, I know.

Yes this is exactly what I was thinking.
Here is the basics of the series:
Doomed Champion is reborn to save the world, but he will break the world to save it. In the process he will likely lose his sanity and his life.
To save the world he must first destroy the Forsaken. Men and women of a past age who gave themselves to Shai'tan to live forever. Then he will face Shai'tan at the gates of hell.
His enemies and allies number as nations swear to his cause. Central to his life are around 20-30 secondary characters. Central to them are two other "main characters", each with their own story (My favorite being Mat Cauthon)
There are so many characters and the world is so rich and diverse, you can go several chapters before you see any of the 3 main characters, let alone the savior/destroyer of all.
Now imagine that just when it seems the villians are being weeded out, you discover you can't really just kill the Forsaken since they have already given their soul away. You can really only permanently get rid of them one way and only a couple have died that way.
Now do you understand why it would seem like this series would go on forever?
