I just got done reading Double Idemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain. It was good, gritty crime nior stuff--the closest I've read yet to Jim Thompson, who is my favorite.

If you're looking for a pretty quick read (they're both pretty short), I recommend both of 'em.
