Crime Noir

If you like the simple, to-the-point, dark and gritty writing of Raymond Chandler you've got to read Jim Thompson's books.

I've read them all and am really sad that there is nothing new for me to read by this author. Start with "The Killer Inside Me." Go from there--you can't go wrong.

I'll have to check it out.

If you like hard-boiled mysteries I recommend the work of Andrew Vachss. His stuff is a little tough to stomach (all of his work concerns child exploitation) but it really opens your eyes and his style is unbelievable.

I read "The Killer Inside Me" about 8 years ago, and it was one of the best books I've ever read!

I've read a few of Vachss stuff. The most recent being "the Getaway Man." Loved it--no child exploitation, though.

He also wrote a Batman novel that sort of blew--and if I remember correctly, it did deal with child exploitation. The dude is weird.

The cololest thing about Vachss? The guy is either missing an eye, or just thinks wearing an eyepatch is neat. That and he has 2 "s"'s at the end of his name. Man, it's tough to use the letter "s" in plural.
