So... I'm BColonjello...and lets see...I am not but a player or 2 from being a very good team....in the somewhat mediocre East...we just made the play offs with a good young core, and I have 10 guys inked up for next yr...but no draft picks. we are under both caps (53 mill) and need to sign 3 players. What should I do ???
I Know ! I'll go out and trade 2 players with 5 million of expiring contracts for a ....$62,000,000 commitment .....to a pg, who in 4 yrs has yet to really show anything that says 'sign me to a long term deal' (oops) and le 'Tweener', a talented player who played his one and only good season, out of position, and with Nash. Oh yeah, and as a bonus, I get to help my good buddy RSarver out a little with his payroll...
sure...where do I sign???

So....I am LArry Bird...I have one of the premier big men in the league, though down the past couple of yrs...but hey, the Pacers have had a rollercoaster goin on. I have two or three players who are salary cap stinkers and I am up the WAZOO with long term deals. But atleast we are staying out of the papers......Let's see...maybe I can get 62 Million in contracts on two more sub par performers with lenghty deals AND a last stop PF journeyman for a yr....hmmmm...and what ? You'll throw in a Second Round pick ???
Hoo Boy, you gots a deal.
Oh yeah, did I mention my boss is one of the "Billionaire' owners ? This tax aint killing us...its these damn long deals...
I can't believe how badly some of you guys are overreading the value of the Phoenix Suns players. Don't you guys think that other teams realize that Shawn Marion is making $16 million per season, and his offense is quite limited?
Don't you guys think that these other teams saw mBoris Diaw last season? Is strange value right now is definitely in the red.
Steve Nash isn't going anywhere. That leaves the Phoenix Suns with two players with positive trade value. I'm talking about Amare Stoudemire and Barbosa.
Shawn Marion is movable, but he's not going to fetch a boatload of young talent. I don't think anybody is going to give up another All-Star.
Jermaine O'Neal? How in the world does he fit into the Phoenix Suns style. Not to mention he has a massive contract.
Joe

So I am now Danny Ainge.....and my good buddies in the West are willing to give me an allstar caliber sf/pf, one of the most versitile players in the league, for an expired big man and a couple of young SGs...
Really ? ... where do I sign ? and lets do it quickly. Oh wait...AND you are going to give me some draft picks too ? Right on! Just don't ask me for our #5 pick...if you do, I 'll just trade a similar package for Gasol.
As a general rule, the best trades are the ones that the other team suggests rahter than attempts to steal somebody from another team.
BTW, how many times do I have to remind people of the base year contract issue with Barbosa and Diaw. They are effectively untradable because of the need to have a team below the salary cap to be involved.
Marion, Diaw, Banks, #24, #29 to Indiana for O'Neal, Ike Diogu, & Armstrong...

I think you're underestimating how other teams feel about Marion. It seems that Suns fans don't rate him as highly as most other people to me.
I don't think he would be the number 1 on many teams but he could be one of the best number 2 options in the NBA. He has an all round game and teams love somebody that can do a bit of everything. I don't think we'll get a superstar in a straight awap but if its worked properly the Suns could get a very nice package for Shawn.
I have not read this entire thread but how about the Suns trade both their number ones and Banks to move up in the draft?
Banks isn't an asset...to dump his salary you'd need to do a deal like:
Banks + #29 to Charlotte for nothing (salary dump). Charlotte has done that before for draft picks.
You could also get rid of Banks by including him in a deal for a player someone really covets (like Marion).

Okay this is what I've been talking about. Overvaluing a 3 time AS, Marion is limited offensively to the point of he has limited outside range. Everyone in the league is trying to copy the Suns style of play which is a system in which Marion strives. He is easily one of the Top 15 players in the league and if you don't believe that then pass some of the stuff your smoking to me because I would love to be that delusional. I bet you any team in the NBA would love to have a player like Marion on their team: all he does is average a double double and rank amongst league leaders in blocks and steals, shoot about 50% & 80% from the field and FT line, right this guy is garbage!!! As for Jermaine O'Neal I realize he has a monster contract and thus my trade proposal mentioned earlier included trading KT, Diaw, Marion and Banks to free up some room to absorb O'Neals contract.
IMO...combining Diaw and Banks KILLS any deal. It would not be so bad if it were a 1 or 2 yr thing....but you are asking a GM to wrap up 62 million (13 per) over the next 4 yrs. Even the Great Marion cannot offset that....especially since he has only 2 yrs left on his deal.
You might be able to sneak one of the Pariahs (Doris & Marcus) in a deal with SM.
But it would be GM suicide to take both of theml...w/o unloading their lepers too.
has any team contacted phoenix about a possible trade for marion?
Apparently all the time, BUT the stuff that gets reported is all bargain basement stuff. Everybody wants Marion as long as they think the Suns will try to give him away in a salary dump.
Marion has two years left on his contract. You can easily get rid of him for crap with one year contracts. Or you might get rid of him for some other overpaid guys with longer contracts someone else is trying to dump.
But the number of deals that actually would get the Suns closer to winning a championship, those do not appear to be forthcoming. Ignore the silly ESPN spectulations. There just isn't anything out there.
