With Cassell about to turn 38, I don't think the "contract year" bump is in play anymore. I'm concerned that his numbers nose-dived last year; he might be running on fumes at this point in his career. But he could probably be effective for 20 minutes a game, which is all the Suns would want.
Williams is pretty bad, but I guess he did okay with those open-court Nets teams right after they got Kidd. Since Marion has only two years left, I think the Suns need to keep an eye on what kind of talent they get back, instead of looking at a pure salary dump.
Maggette is terrific when he's healthy and has his head in the right place. Offensively this trade is good for the Suns, but they would take a step back defensively and it's risky because all three Clippers players have injury histories.
I definitely don't think the Suns should have to include their own pick. Ten spots isn't a big move in this draft (from what I gather), so the Clippers should be willing to swap #14 for #24 based on the other incentives you laid out.
no matter how "good" the trade would seem, you don't trade a perennial All-Star within the division to a team in desperate need of someone like him, unless it is for a perennial all star in return...
That trade wouldn't work unless it was marion for Brand.....
We don't have a lot of Clipper fans on this board, but it has never seemed like the LA based Suns fans were nearly as interested in the team getting Maggette as people living in other ares. Dunleavy is not the first Clipper coach to have problems with him.
My read on it is that Maggette is far more effective against the Suns than the rest of the NBA.
i like maggette because he doesn't settle for jumpshots..
and i think he can defend and rebound a little..
I think the Suns have a real need for someone who can drive the basket and is physically strong enough to finish. However, I'd rather look for that in the draft than to give up Marion for a backup.
Suns Trade:
Shawn Marion Marcus Banks
#24 Pick
#29 Pick
Clippers Trade:
Corey Maggette Sam Cassell
Aaron Williams
#14 Pick
Result for Suns:
Suns drop 3 million dollars in salary(basically removing Marcus Banks' contract immediately).
Suns get a back up point guard next year that's too old to run with this team.
Suns get a poor man's Shawn Marion who is making less than half the money, and who can't stay healthy.
Suns get an expiring contract in Aaron Williams.
Suns move up in the draft.
Result for Clippers:
Clippers move the guy that Dunleavy hates (Maggette).
Clippers get a legitimate All-Star to pair with Elton Brand and one of the top small forwards in the game.
I'd have to say no.
