Kerr: Not pursuing Marion trade

Hear a Kerr clip this morning on KTAR. He said something along the lines of: "we arent pursuing a trade for marion, but we listen to anyone calling us with an honest proposal."

Something also about only if it makes the team better.

Thoughts?

My only thought is does this warrant it's own thread or it would be well suited for one of the 10 threads about trading Marion?

I'd say it's own thread is fine. Since the rest are speculation and this is something that is "New news" if you will.

Kerr just scored points with me. This probably means Shawn isn't going anywhere unless we get a star in return. No dumb trade Marion for picks stuff.

See I think his comments are open to interpetation and is based on what you think the suns could/should do...

For example, I took his comments to mean, we are absolutely open to trading marion, and if the right deal comes along, that makes us deeper and better see ya Marion..

Also, d'Antoni said something similar earlier when talking about Shawn, but it was a hell of a lot more convinceing about shawn staying:

"Sure we will take phone calls about shawn, we have to, we'll listen and then say no thanks, and hang up the phone"

I guess the feeling has changed a bit as the offseason has progressed...

Every GM in the league understands what Kerr just said, which was: "Marion is on the block, but the price is high, call us if you're serious."

The Suns have said the same thing every single year. They are willing to listen to offers. D'Antoni said the same think on KTAR but then said that he doesn't see Shawn going anywhere. Now Kerr says the same thing.

If your the GM of course you have to listen to any offer. It's your job. Most players are available at the right price. That's a far cry from saying your trying to trade him. If they were, the Suns would be picking up the phone and calling teams which doesn't appear to be the case.

However, the fact they both made statements saying they don't see Shawn going anywhere says 2 things to me.

1. They are not getting the offers they want and are not willing to move him for basically picks.

2. Like in previous years, they really have no desire to move Marion at all.

Here is the more interesting part. When I heard Kerr last week and D'Antoni they both side stepped questions regarding Kurt. To me that's more open to interpretation.

I think DA's comments have been pretty consistant. He wants Marion to stay because he knows trading him will weaken the team.

I've thought all year that the Suns would make a big trade and try to cut payroll if they didn't make the finals. I just never imagined a scenario where David Stern ended the Suns season instead of another basketball team.

Pretty limited thought process imho

This is new news about a Kerr interview. I would consider it hijacking if this were tagged onto an existing thread about marion or whathaveyou. It would totally change the subject to a new subject

See to me that would be a HUGE mistake.... Say we do trade KT, (ofcourse this is assuming We don't land Camby in return), and the #24 pick and then the suns will ofcourse sell #29 pick, we go into next year with a weaker team than last year and we still don't have ANYONE to guard duncan... and seriously that is my biggest concern....

Because this year, if we didn't have KT guarding Duncan, then Amare would be forced to guard him, and we all know he is foul prone, and once he gets in foul trouble who the hell would we have to come in???? Pat Burke??

Yes he has a 7 million dollar expiering contract that we can shed this year, but when we lose him and then Marion next year, Our rotation will be

PG: Nash/Banks
SG: Bell/Barbosa
SF: Diaw
PF: Amare
C: ?

A 35 year old Nash, this team is still a top 5 playoff team, but we would be swpet by the spurs/Mavs

Now, please don't misunderstand me, I am not saying KT is the only difference between winning a championship and not, however I am saying KT is a HUGE factor is us beating SA, and without him we would be in big trouble IMO, and the 2008 NBA championship run goes right through SA...

i think kerr scored points with me as well. No trading shawn until we can make a serious championship run, no suspensions/amare injury involved. and if we come up short this time, we know it was because of our own weaknesses. keeping marion is a smart move on the management's part.

now dealing KT is a whole 'nother story. if we're going to dump him, we need someone who can match up to big men in the league (namely duncan) at least slightly well.

I like this too because it send out a better message to the fans that the organization isn't out there making calls and actively selling Shawn to different teams. If other teams want him, come and get him, but make a good offer.

Yeah, it's doublespeak. Now all the GMs in the league know to call Kerr. Meanwhile, if nothing ultimately transpires, Kerr can confidently point to this when talking to Marion about how 'valuable' he is to this team....

I honestly don't care what you consider it. You aren't the moderator of the forum, I am.
