That would be a bizarre trade for the Suns, since they are allegedly trying to cut salary. A lateral salary move makes sense if it improves the talent level, but adding more salary just for a minor upgrade to the offense?

To me, it's basically only a moderate salary escalation. You're essentially dumping Banks (Wesley is expiring) and the guaranteed salary at 24 so that you can afford to pay Gooden. You'd still need some more depth and a back up point guard, but you'd have a big who D'Antoni would probably be wililng to play for about 25-30 minutes a game.
Yeah so we wouldn't make trades for KG because of possible salary implications down the road but we would send Kurt's expiring contract for Drew Gooden? Unlikely.
While it gets rid of Banks, I don't like this deal at all. The Suns lose a pick which could net us a cheap, useable player and then they also lose their best interior defender and only guy who can do anything against Duncan? I like some parts of Goodens game, but this is way too much for him.
Fine, then Cleveland throws in Newble ($3.4 million, 2008) and maybe some cash to cover part of his contract.
Come on, George, we know you hate trade proposals, but at least put some thought into how you try to shoot them down. Your knee-jerk rejections get tiresome in a big hurry.
I didn't shoot it down. I just said the numbes as presented didn't work. That's not the same thing.
Obviously the Cavs could throw a piece of junk like Newby onto the pile to make the money work better. I was thinking more in terms of Pavlovic, but his status is currently blocked pending a qualifying offer. The same holds for KT's status until he decides on whether to opt out of his contract.
The pluses and minuses are relatively close, so the difference between Newby or Pavlovic could very well be a deal maker/breaker.
PLUSES:
Gooden is more likely to do welll in the Suns style play than the slow ball teams he's been on. He can shoot and rebound while beeing faster up and down the court than KT.
Banks seems to have worn out his welcome here and has a lot of time on his contract.
MINUSES:
Gooden's not the defnnder that KT is and has only one more year before he opts out. He's on his third team in his short career, whiich is troubling.
CONCLUSION
Depending on whether the Suns think they could re-sign KT to a cheap contract after next year, who iwould be taken at #24 and if the Suns really do view Banks as a dead weight loss, it is a close call. In that case, Pavlovic rather than Newby might make the difference

Also consider that Gooden is a good offensive rebounder and a very good overall rebounder. Him being on what could be a contract year is also a good thing. I love Kurt for his post defense and leadership, but Gooden is a player for whom I would move Kurt....
I like Gooden, but it's puzzling to me why the Cavaliers have never embraced him. I've heard that he doesn't play hard and is very annoying off the court. Every time I've watched him play, it looks like the effort is there to me.

The same could be asked about the Magic and the Griz.
Sometimes things are just a function of how the team works. Stephen Jackson hated the Pacers crawl up the court offense and was reborn at GS. But othertimes, the problem is the guy and stats don't tell the whole story.
