Atlanta is looking at anywhere between 7 and 9 million in cap space this summer. We all know that they have problems attracting people to sign there, so perhaps they would be interested in making a trade for a veteran.
Lord knows they love swingman.
Speedy Claxton hasn't worked out there, and I know that they wouldn't mind getting out from his contract.
I didn't get out a calculator, but with the cap space atlanta has it matches up pretty good.
Anyways, Josh Smith is a stud. He is going to need to get extended, but he won't be looking at max money. We get stuck with Speedy Claxton, but maybe he actually helps us a bit.
Smith would step in and almost immediately replace what we lose from Marion. Then we can use the #3 presumably for frontcourt help, but there would be a lot of options. I wouldn't be against Conley either.
This move would lop 8 million off the payroll before paying the pick. So we wind up saving 5 million after signing the number 3. We would then presumably try to get a team to take Banks' contract in exchange for the #24 pick.
the hawks can add their #3 pick and the suns will give them their 24 and 29
You're obviously kidding, but I would add Barbosa/ATL '08 #1 and keep our #24 (Splitter) and #29 (Jordan) from our end and pull the trigger in a heartbeat....
Keep in mind, I don't think that Splitter or Jordan will be there at those slots, but obviously this is a scenario that is not plausible anyways....

Atlanta will not take Marion's contract even for free, not to mention to give us #3 in addition. Stop dreaming. They are not about to compete for anything for the next two years of Marion's contract span anyway.
If they are smart, they will take Horford or Conley at 3 and give us #11 in exchange for their own 08 pick and Banks. We could then do the Marion for Rasheed trade and pick one of the swingmen in the Youngs, Thorton, or Wright.
Well, thank you for your insight and your ability to speak of the future in absolutes....
I just think penciling him in as the starting center on a championship contender is entirely unrealistic. If he were anywhere near that good, he would haven't chickened out of the last several draft, and he'd be a much higher prospect this year.

exactly.....rebuilding teams dont give up a.) their cap space and b.) lotto picks for guys who's contracts will be expiring before they even become competative.
it might be a fair trade valuewise.....but teams arent around to dump contracts on and take their picks.
Splitter will be a bust -- if he even comes out -- and even in a best-case scenario he's nowhere near starting center material.
Splitter is in the draft this year for sure - he can't pull out because he's a 22+ year-old international player. He does, however, have a contract with his current team that he can't get out of, meaning he'll be unavailable until the season after next (08/09).
