Seau: Tomlinson remarks meant in jest
ESPN.com news services
DAVIE, Fla. -- Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau insists he meant no harm when he suggested the way to stop former teammate LaDainian Tomlinson is to feed him fried chicken and watermelon.
"I wasn't offended at all," Tomlinson said in response to Seau's comments. "You just have to know Junior."
Tomlinson acknowledged that he and Seau, while teammates the last two years with the Chargers, traditionally had fried chicken on Fridays.
Dolphins senior vice president of media relations Harvey Greene said that Seau will not be disciplined or reprimanded for his remarks. Coach Dave Wannstedt emphasized Seau meant no disrespect to his former teammate.
"I'm sure Junior wasn't thinking in any type of [racial] overtone and, knowing the type of person he is, I think it would be wrong for anyone to interject that into his comment," Wannstedt said. "Junior is very close to Tomlinson and has a great deal of respect for him, not only as a player but also as an individual. That's why he was wearing [Tomlinson's] jersey around our complex today.
"For anyone to read anything into Junior's comments would be doing him, and everything he stands for, as evidenced by his track record in community relations, a grave disservice."
Asked Wednesday how to limit Tomlinson, San Diego's running back, Seau told reporters: "You give him watermelon and load him up with fried chicken and tell him to keep eating."
Seau, who is of Samoan descent, later said he and Tomlinson, who is black, are friends and the comment was meant in jest. Seau was wearing a Tomlinson jersey when he made the comment.
"We ate that all the time. We'd have fried chicken every Friday," Seau said. "I'm sorry you guys took it that way. I should have realized it was an oversight on my part. I'm sorry it came out that way."
League vice president of public relations Greg Aiello told ESPN.com on Wednesday afternoon the NFL will not comment on Seau's remarks.
Monday's game will mark Seau's return to San Diego as an opponent. He played for the Chargers from 1990-02.
Seau has been honored in the past for his foundation's charity work and philanthropy, earning the NFL's Man of the Year award in 1994. He's also scheduled to host a luncheon honoring current San Diego quarterback Drew Brees for his charity work on Tuesday.
"Hopefully, everyone can know who I am and who I stand for and that there isn't anything to look into," Seau said.
When Tiger Woods won The Masters in 1997, golfer Fuzzy Zoeller created a stir by saying: "Tell him not to serve fried chicken next year ... or collard greens, or whatever the hell they serve."
Zoeller was referring to The Masters' champions dinner, when the reigning tournament winner chooses the menu.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Juniors comment was about how they use to eat chicken on fridays. It wasnt racist at all. But i do agree about the double standards. I think rush was right. McNabb is by far the worse starting QB in the league. He has not lived up to his contract extension.
Jr's been around long enough to know what not to say to the media. Major mistake on his part. At least he didn't call him Sambo...
Honestly though, I don't see how someone can play professional sports and be a racist. That's the great thing about sports: through getting personal with teammates and relying on other people, sports tends to break down the walls of ignorance that separate us.
I'm sure he didn't mean it, but he should know that you don't say stuff like that to the media.
p.s.- That's also the great thing about chatrooms and forums like this one. You can only judge a person by their thoughts and spelling errors- not their appearance.

That goes without saying.Whenever you eat fried chicken, you follow it up with watermelon. It doesn't bother me one bit what Rush,Junior,Rocker,Jimmy the Greek,or anyone else says. It's their opinions. They don't affect me.I will say, however, that the only people allowed to make racist comments in the media are minorities.
Originally posted by Cardinals.Ken Ok, so we're supposed to forgive Seau for making comments like this, and believe him when he says "just kidding"?
If he were of white European descent, everyone would be calling for his head.
Limbaugh got run up a flagpole for comments far less offensive than this...
Incredible!
How about there is nothing to forgive as he and Tomlinson are close friends. Seau's only mistake was in saying to the media so they could make a big deal about it.
This has nothing to do with racism, he was just giving he friend some crap, he just forgot they wern't in the same locker room anymore.

Right or Wrong Limbaugh is a jerk, a hate merchant.
I could care less about Rush's comments. His act during his entire life should be punnished.
He should be put in a low grade apartment in the Bronx with no money, and see if he can survive. See how he like being poor.
Limbaugh is an @sshole.

If you want me to be more descriptive I need a week and all the server space for this board to write up a report on why Limbaugh is an @sshole. Hate merchant.

That is absurd !!!!
I don't see a problem with what Seau said. If you look at the context in which he said. That is always the problem the media taking things out of context.
