Video: Rod Graves Discusses 2007 NFL Draft (Part 2 of 2)

Cardinals Vice President of Football Operations Rod Graves recently sat down with Cardinals Reporter Paul Calvisi to discuss the upcoming 2007 NFL Draft. The interview covered a wide variety of subjects including the Cardinals draft preparation over the past five months, the strength and depth of the draft class, and what the Cardinals are looking for in potential picks. Here is the Part Two of the interview.

Some observations I came away with..

Team takes lots of phone calls when their picks come up about trades and such. Fastest 15 minutes in football.

Seemed to really like Joe Thomas a lot. Stated once again that he likes the OL depth in the draft, mentioned Brown. and brought up Gandy and Al johnson again in the sense that although they may look for OL they wont be forced to.

He and Wiz first conversation and a conversation they are still having is mostly about making the front lines better.

They would really like to have more draft picks. They could trade down and still have a player at a postition they targeted they really like and get extra picks. But they will also get a great player @ #5 even if they dont move down. Really wouldnt show his hand about trading down but I got the feeling that he really wanted to get more draft picks somehow which may or may not include trading down from #5.

This kind of scares me but, i came away impressed with Rod Graves in that interview. I can see where guys on this board that know him, like him. In that interview, it sounds like the Cards have a distinct plan on the guys they want and, here's they key thing, hope they can execute it.Graves kind of had a confidence about him that i think has been missing in the past. Maybe being the clear cut "guy in charge" is wearing well on him.

Here's what i think they have planned. They'll make the pick at 5 if either AP or Thomas is there. If they are both gone, they will try and trade down a few spots and take whoever is left between Brown and Branch and try and pick up an extra 2nd/3rd rounder. I also think they will deal Reggie Wells and pick up an extra later round pick for him.

First, this was another first-rate production Jim O. Keep 'em coming.

Rod Graves certainly seems like a class act.

With all of that said, I think that we will trade down to go after Levi or Staley. Maybe we will make a move w/ N.E.

What scares me is that graves is control of our other pics as well. No matter who we get in the first, we will be fine.
