Suggs fails to improve times

Arizona State defensive end Terrell Suggs took his second crack at improving his 40-yard dash speed and he failed.

Running on an artificial surface Friday, Suggs ran 4.87, 4.9 and 4.93 40s weighing 258 pounds. A month ago, he ran similar times even though he had been training for three months to become faster and prove to teams he has great speed off the corner.

Those who attended the March workout at Arizona State felt that Suggs may have cost himself the fourth pick in the draft by running in the 4.8 and 4.9-second range. The Cardinals, who have been looking for a pass-rusher, appeared to be the most interested team in taking him with the sixth pick, but his poor time may make that less certain.

The workout featured head coaches and front office personnel from the Cardinals, Chiefs and Texans along with other teams. Suggs ran three 20-yard shuttles in 2.84 seconds.

Those aren't considered great numbers. Suggs set a collegiate record with 24 sacks last season, but most top pass-rushing defensive ends run in the 4.6 to 4.7 range.

Suggs is my favorite pick for the cards. However, i am starting to get concerned over his speed. Hopefully he's doing this so he can stay in AZ. I think I am the only one who would be happy with Kennedy. He would ass much needed beef to the line, and would allow D. Johnson to get into the lineup.

We might pass on him at 6, but maybe... Just a tiny little puny chance that if we trade with the Jets.. The reason would be to draft Suggs at 13. I dont really think he will fall to 13, but you never know with these workouts. I can see us trading out of 6 and moving a few sports down and then taking Suggs though. While picking up an extra 2nd or 3rd.

Yeah,why would he tank his times and cost himself money?The only reason this workout was called was to show the last one was a fluke bad performance.And this one was worse.I don't think i want him at 6.He was my second choice to begin with but now he may be a product of the bad OL'S in the Pac-10.At 258 pounds and slow he's becoming a major reach.

In my opinion, a HUGE reach at a need position.

For me it's not a question of what your getting in Suggs. I think he'll probably be a decent player.
The problem is the opportunity cost.
The opportunity cost of Not drafting Leftwich (or Robertson) could turn out to be ugly.

Listen. Leftwich is a great player, and probably will be, but I don't see a point in having him sit on the bench while an opposing quarterback throws for four touchdowns on a broken ankle, or being down by insane numbers of points by the time we hit the second half. I've watched Wakefield stick to the tackle like glue too many times to bear it anymore.

I think Suggs does. Leftwich, no matter how great he is, can't overcome a 49 point score throwing to Jason McAddely and Bryan Gilmore. I feel they're serviceable, and possibly even good recievers, but a team needs some sort of defense to be successful. I'd rather McCown manage a good game, Shipp run for enough yards to control the clock, and have the defense keep the other team in check. Then, it may not be as fun to watch, but the team won't be in constant shootouts. I'm not saying that Suggs would bring instant success this year, but with what we have in place already, a few key offseason additions could really make us strong on the defensive side of the ball.

Exactly - we can't think for this year - thye front office with it's lack of anything proven at WR or D-Line isn't - so we have to look at the future - I used to love Suggs and his was ferocious at the college level - BUT A LOT OF GUYS HAVE BEEN - Anthony Thompson was a stud in college, I believe he actually broke the Div 1 record for most rushing yards - alas, he was slow and small and couldn't hack it - hell - he was beaten out by Johnnie Johnson! (mind you I loved JJ - when he was healthy and still think he deserved Rookie of the Year over Emmitt Smith - but we showed the 'Boys on that one - who's wearing Red now?!) - Or Danny Wuerffel - product of system or our very own Thomas Burke - didn't he hold the Big Ten Record for sacks and have 22 his last year? I remember one of my buddies in Law School who was a Badger telling me how awesome this uy was and how we got the steal of the draft. People want to nitpick between tenths of second, but you know what, Plas are made and not made based on fractions of a second and how can you fans piss in the faces of what Scouts have been suing as a criteria for years solely because you like a player and HE'S A DEVIL?

Leftwhich if there is the answer - but I won't be upset if we take Suggs, I just hope to be wrong. Now if we draft a QB in the second round, then I will find Graves and personally vomit on his decaptitated head.

No doubt. How soon people forget. We had 19 sacks two years ago. That was less than a PLAYER (Strahan). We had 21 sacks last year, and not a player in the top 40 of the NFC . Combine BOTH seasons, and we are still buried in the bottom half of the NFC in sacks last year. Many areas of this team need improving, but the suckage of the pass rush is beyond belief. It's historic suckage. Unparalleled. It's our weakest link, and if you think it can be ignored and overcome by a QB, you are in for another disappointing year.

I don't know. Most of the time I hear scouts talking about how fans put TOO MUCH emphasis on workout numbers. Many great players have been terrible in workouts....
