Nice article, Cunningham's comment was interesting that Matt "thinks" he understands the game but he doesn't yet and that caused him to hold the ball a bit too long a few times, but that he's going to be the real deal eventually. That's what they talked about all pregame and during the game on radio, that the Cards were worried the chiefs would show Matt a bunch of looks and he'd get fooled into making the wrong read. It happened a few times but everyone seemed to think overall he was surprisingly good at reading them like on the first TD where he audibled because there was no safety in the middle of the field.

Pretty strong words from Gunther considering what Matt did to his team in his first NFL start.

More accurately, what Leinart did in the first quarter of his first NFL start. Based on the six points put up by the Cardinals offense in the remaining 3-1/2 quarters, I'd say Gunther Cunningham's defense figured out the rookie pretty well.

Didn't really look like it. Matt still performed well (and had a third TD dropped in the endzone) but the Cardinals coaching staff siezed up and tried to go completely conservative.

And had BJ not dropped a TD my 6 year old could catch, would you be saying the same thing? Leinart wasn't fooled by KC at all, he made the one bad throw, but that was just as much a poor route as it was a bad pass.

Based on what they said on radio the whole game I don't think that was a bad route I think Matt got fooled into making a hot read and throw that was the wrong read. That's what Kuhlmann said repeatedly at the half, KC was trying to give Matt a blitz look and then fall back into a defense so that when he made the hot read throw, the DB would be right there, and thats what it looked like on the pick. It looked like Anquan's route wasn't good but largely because Matt made the wrong hot read?

Wolfley said that when it happened, Kuhlmann essentially predicted it at halftime said Matt has to be careful they're trying to bait him into throwing the hot route that's not really open.

I should add I don't think Gunther was actually knocking Matt I think he was saying most rookies wouldn't even try to audible they'd just go with the play but Matt thought he could make the read and audible, he just wasn't always making the right read. If you recall Denny said that exact thing prior to the game, Matt had to be careful about that because of what KC does.

I'd be saying that your six-year-old has some serious pass-catching skills. My nine-year-old plays quarterback for his NFL flag team, and he had more drops than completions on Saturday. (They still won the game 18-8, so it's all good. )
