SF Cornerback Spencer Will Defend Arizona Receiver Fitzgerald

By MATT MAIOCCO
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

In college, their head-to-head matchups took place in obscurity on the practice field at the University of Pittsburgh.

On Sunday, quite a few more people will be watching as NFL rookies Shawntae Spencer and Larry Fitzgerald face off when the 49ers play the Arizona Cardinals on Candlestick Point.

Fitzgerald, a receiver who finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting, was the No.3 overall pick in the draft. T he Cardinals awarded him a six-year, $60.4 million contract that includes $15.2 million in guaranteed money.

They know each other so it should be sweet.

Especially for Fitz - 1st NFL TD on Sunday - Maybe 2.

That's pretty cool for them to go against one another for the first time in their pro careers. Go Larry. Light 'em up

If Spencer is covering Fitz then Fitz better light him up because Plummer covers the best WR every week and if he's not covering Fitz, Fitz ought to go off on Spencer.

Everything I've read says Plummer will be on Fitz most plays.

Spencer said something the other day about Fitz that I nearly posted here but decided if I did I'd be accused of piling on. He said they talk frequently but "he rarely talks about football and when he does he's just talking about his contract and how much money he has now." It's hard to know in what context it was said, tongue in cheek or sincere, but it did make me do a double take. My guess is Spencer was kidding.

If you just got a boat load of money, wouldn't you be talking about it?

I really think they were talking about that in the context of how much larry makes as compared to an ex-teammate.

This bodes well for me on my fantasy team. I need some production from him this week. I say just throw the ball up and let him climb the ladder to get it.
