OT: The "Sheriff"
Okay, I like the current crew calling MNF but WTF was up with calling Peyton Manning "the Sheriff" last night?
I've never heard him called that before and it doesn't even make sense to me. Field general makes sense. Captain Cool. Captain Comeback. Joe Cool. Broadway Joe. Mad Bomber. All of these make some kind of sense but the Sheriff just sounds like a pseudo heroic sounding moniker that hasn't ever been attached to a QB before.
It's like ESPN had a production meeting and decided to come up with a nickname for Manning that they could force down our throats because it was MNF.
What does enforcing the law have to do with Manning's strengths as a QB?
I bet this board, within the first 10 posts could come up with a better nickname for Manning than the Sheriff.
It was too funny hearing Jaws and Chuckie forgetting to call Manning by his new nickname and catching themselves. "Boy, Manning did a good job...uhh, I mean the Sheriff did a good job on that play."

They said in the pregame that's what Gruden calls him but I agree I'd never heard it used before.
I remember a few years ago when I think it was Jaws that said Manning's audibling is highly overrated because from talking to coaches around the league they all feel that well over half the time, Manning isn't really audibling it's a series of dummy hand signals and audible calls trying to fool the defense.
What would be interesting although probably dangerous would be us openign the game no huddle ourselves. I think the wear and tear on both defenses would be too risky, tired defense getting shredded, but it would be fun to watch Manning and Warner match wits.

Did they say why Gruden likes to call him the Sheriff? I can't stand the ESPN pre-game and usually watch Total Access until kickoff so I missed that. Well, that's not quite true since a 5:30 kickoff to ESPN means there's time to talk for another 15-20 minutes. Any time I record a game on ESPN I always have to FF for a while before I can actually get to the game.
This sheriff analogy just has me curious. Now that you say it was Gruden's idea though it probably doesn't mean anything and is just meant to sound cool.
Long arm of the law? What 'choo gonna do when comes for you?
Hey, I think I got it. A gunslinger. Cowboy. Sheriff. That must be it.

He does have an impressive melon. Him and his brother make a goofy looking pair that's for sure. I was going to say that I'm more cool with their goofiness while being football studs than I am with Brady's good looks and fame but have you seen his head lately? His cranium seems to be expanding as well. And a dimple isn't supposed to go all the way through to the back is it? Kirk Douglas eat your heart out.

How about "The Actor", for his presnap shenanigans and his commercial fetish?

He's certainly not under exposed on tv but I think he does a good job with his acting.

I agree. I like him (and his brother).
But what about the Sellout--
he will endorse anything for $
his team will sellout opposing team's stadiums for a chance to watch the Sheriff, er, I mean Sellout play.

Warning this is extremely corny.......Gruden's explanation is that wherever he goes he "lays down the law."
Feel free to vomit now, I know I did.

The Sheriff.
That's freaking awesome.
