My pick for 1st round bust for 2003-Kyle Boller QB California
Boller sure sound a heck of a lot like Kelly Stouffer (Cards 1987 first round pick). Big, strong, great arm, but only had one good college season. I read somewhere that Boller's career completion percentage at Cal was something like 47%!!

Boller better than Leftwich! No way in Hades.
That sounds about right he was 53% as a senior and only 49 as a junior. To give perspective, in October of 2002 USA Today did a preview of this coming QB draft. THey included Eli Manning(they had him 3rd) but they rated Boller as the 9th best QB in this draft. They had Leftwich #1 and Palmer #5(behind Leftwich, Ragone, Manning and Chris Simms).
So you can see how far both guys came this year.
Boller has all the talent but you have to wonder about that % even as bad as Cal was most of his career.
he's being told he'll go top 10 and I suspect that's probably true but he's far from a lock.
I agree with the rule that Bill Walsh followed when drafting a Qb.
Never draft a guy that completed less than 60% of his passes in college.....I guess that we should have followed that in regards to Plummer.

Everyone has their own opinions but as far as what I saw of Boller I thought he looked very good. I was hoping that he would fall to the second round and that we would draft him but he has shot up the draft board to the top half of the first round. I think he will be a good QB in the NFL. He has everything that a top QB should have, arm strength, mobility, size and a cool head on his shoulders. When Joey Harrington's coach at Oregon came to Cal and coached Boller last year he improved big time. He might not be as good as Leftwitch but he has the talent and with good coaching like last year who knows how good he will turn out.

Oh absolutely, don't forget Boller was an absolute can't miss prospect out of HS if not for the guys in place or just recruited at USC(Palmer was a year ahead of him but had a redshirt year), Stanford etc he would have been a high profile recruit at a high profile program.
he went to Cal and was largely a disappointment but then Cal really wasn't good much of that time so people tend to give Boller some slack.
My thing is % is usually an indication of something and his is so low even in his great senior year, that you have to wonder. I would not take him in round one for us but yeah round 2 he's a potential steal.
I don't know. I think Palmer is a good candidate for bust of the year. Granted, he had the stellar year but his overall career was terrible. Could it be he finally put it all together? Perhaps, but something tells me he won't succeed in the NFL.
