I have said since we hired him that dave mcginnis would make a better college coach than an NFL coach.. I used to spout this as far back as the old azprosports board...
John Gambadoro stole some of my thunder...but I think mac would be a great fit for the UofA...but only if he hired a very good offensive and defensive coordinator. Mac could bring in the recruits and give speeches- and then let other guys teach, game plan and execute..
so - I will take it a step further. He should hire 2 guys who would be a good fit and would take the job (probably) - defensive coordinator: vince tobin.. My understanding vince sold his big house and kept a smaller house in scottsdale when he coached for the lions - so he might still be in town (not sure). Vince would be a very good college defensive coordinator. Offensive coordinator:
jerry sullivan. this may not work for jerry - but jerry spent a bunch of time coaching in college - and maybe after this season of taking his lumps in the NFL - college as an OC would be doable. Not sure jerry would do it...but he would clearly attract top flight receivers and qbs if he was the OC...and he would do a good job of teaching college players.
There..that is my win win for a great guy (mac)..but not a very good head coach in the NFL..
