The big thing is peopel forget the Martz system involved having good Wr's. With the Rams they had Holt and Bruce for years, the system was at its best with Hakim as the #3.
Detroit has some good Wr's.
Sf has who? Jackson struggled all year, Lelie was a bust, if they're going to put in the Martz system, they need to draft, trade and sign WR's to fit it.
Jackson is the only guy on the current roster who has a history of being a Martz level WR, Lelie has the speed I guess, Battle is a decent player but they sure don't look like the typical Martz wr group.
Steven Jackson, who many feel is as good if not better than Frank Gore was underutilized by Martz.
That's debatable. Jackson's rookie year Faulk was still the #1 guy. On his way out, but still a year away from retiring. Jackson's second year, Martz had heart problems and wasn't able to coach for a large portion of the season.
Martz's biggest weakness isn't underutilyzing RB's, it's putting too much pressure on his o-line. The Lions had a terrible o-line and no RB's that were particularly talented or multi-faceted. I would have loved to have seen Martz coaching Tiki Barber and the Giants. He'll get the most out of whatever he winds up working with but I can't imagine the Niners not picking up players that fit into whatever he wants to do. They won't stick with Jackson, etc.
I don't think it's curious at all. They need someone who can develop Alex Smith. Martz will certainly do that. Even if he;s only there two years, Smith will be a better QB and understand routes and timing better than he would have otherwise.

That or Smith will be officially certified as having PTSD syndrome in a couple of years... Take your pick!

curious is that Martz's system is notoriously complex -- and regardless of if its Smith or Hill, the Qb will be young and inexperienced in the system.
Smith is also a guy who, to paraphrase Urban Myer, his coach at Utah--"will stuggle until he knows the system inside and out, but then the next year run it perfectly."
The problem is, Mike Nolan probably doesnt have a year.
Count me among those who think Martz is a good coach and a good hire, traits he shares with Mike Nolan.
The situation could pose long term problems for us if it weren't for one overriding saving fact: John and Denise York, the Niner owners, are meddling incompetents, guaranteed to find ways to ruin any lucky good choices they make. Hallelujah.

Hard to believe that not only is the Cards ownership situation not the worst in the NFL, but there are two worse ones in their own division.

Yeah, the current division could not be any different than competing against the likes of the Cowboys, Skins, Giants, and Eagles of the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

If they're telling the truth it's not a given Smith will be the QB. There are some who think Martz will just make it obvious quicker they blew it taking Smith.
I don't know if Hill is a smokescreen but supposedly there are people in the organization who like him more than Smith already. Of course they also said there were people who wanted anybody BUT Martz for OC.
It'll be interesting but I'll bet they are frantically looking for WR's now.
