Why is everyone so worried...Look what Martz had to work with in the past. He had Roy Williams, Charles Johnson Torry Holt and Issac Bruce. He is coming to a team that has Arnaz Battle, Jason McCaddley, Bryan Gilmore.....Let's see how he does here!
I think Detroit's skill players were very ill-suited to Martz's offense. Williams and Co. have some real skill but McDonald and Furrey were brought in to make things kind of work. QB is a huge question mark for sure but with Bruce potentially on the market and other guys more suited to a Martz offense brought in, SF could make an immediate impact. His offense is complex but let's not forget how well the Rams installed it in one offseason.
I think a certain former Rams QB might just get a shot at the job of short term starter/mentor. He likely won't be the starter next year and another chance to start might be too much to pass up at this stage of his career.
Trent Green! You thought I was going to say Warner, huh!
Good news for the Cards if this is true. Gore has just been marginalized and Smith will be asked to carry his team.
From Matt M.
Quote:
--The first player Martz talked about was Frank Gore. He was quick to recognize that Gore is not just a good running back, he's also a good receiver.
Quote:
---Martz also spoke to Nolan about Joe Staley, calling him an outstanding player.
MIKE MARTZ
--Martz said looking at the tape he sees a lot of potential with the offensive line, and that he plans to build the offense around Frank Gore.
--He said Gore is an unselfish player, like Marshall Faulk. He said Frank is bigger and more physical. He said Gore is a complete player who shouldn't come out of the game, unless he's tired. He said Gore is the centerpiece, and they'll build around him.
--When asked why the QB isn't the centerpiece, Martz said, "I think that's always the case." He said even with the Rams when the club had Warner and Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, the first thing defenses had to do was take away Faulk. "A great running back has such a bigger pact on the game than any other position," Martz said.
Best news I've heard all week. I can't imagine a worse fit. A team that can't afford too many turnovers is giving the keys to a guy who doesn't value the ball. This will be the job that buries Martz for good.

Mike Martz has a reputation of making an average Qb into a stud like Warner, Bulger, Kitna, and Trent Green. The 49ers just need a #1 WR and Frank Gore will be scary under Mike Martz, can you say Marshall Faulk?
For those that think Martz is pass pass only, you don't know anything. The Rams offense was revolve around Marshall Faulk AND THEN Warner and the WRs. Martz even said that himself. He just never had anybody since Faulk to run the ball well.
I will not be surprised if Shaun Hill wins the job under Martz. Hotsler was an absolute joke as an OC. Losing Turner was a huge blow to '9ers. As I mentioned earlier Frank Gore can thrive in Martz scheme. He can flat out catch the ball. He could have 80 catches in a Martz scheme.
The problem in Detroit was a very bad running corp. Kevin Jones could never stay on the field and TJ Duckett is mediocre at best. Matt Millen wouldn't know a balanced roster if it bit him on the butt. They improved immensely on offense this year and he fires Martz. Brilliant.

Trent Green is finished due to his many head injuries.
That's sure what it looks like but Miami's season was long over when he would have had an opportunity to possibly come back so I think the possibility is there that he might make another try at playing. I haven't been keeping up on him though so I don't really know. The last time I saw him interviewed he seemed really intent on continuing to play. I also haven't heard him announce his retirement.
Martz didn't bring in anyone familiar with his system in Detroit so this is probably just the wildest of speculation on my part. I just think with his history of not focusing on young QB's as his starter that he might bring in a QB familiar to the system to bridge the gap. Smith seems to be worse than a rookie QB at this point. He has to be untaught all the bad things that he's learned rather than just being a blank slate.
Kitna, a "stud"? Didn't anyone notice he threw more INTs than TDs this year?
