Jarrett's rent arrangement with Leinarts violated rulesESPN.com news services
By living in a apartment with Matt Leinart last season and not paying half of the rent, USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett violated NCAA rules, but he should be eligible to play this fall.
The NCAA determined that Jarrett violated the "extra benefits" rule and will have to apply for reinstatement, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.
Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his former residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans.
Leinart -- the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in NFL draft -- and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Times. Leinart's father paid the difference
"The information submitted by the University of Southern California regarding the living arrangements of two football student-athletes represents a violation of NCAA extra benefit rules," the NCAA said in a statement reported by the Times.
Coach Pete Carroll said he expected the receiver to be reinstated.
"He won't lose a game," Carroll told the Times.
University compliance officials looked into whether the football program received an unfair advantage and consulted with the NCAA. While Bob Leinart would have been allowed to make up the difference for his son, he might not have been allowed to do so for another player.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Someone has to ask, who the hell pays nearly 4k a month rent on an apartment? How big was this place, and why didn't Bush just hook them up with a free house?

It was Leinart's dad, not Jarrett's. It's ok for Leinart, but Jarrett is required to pay half the rent himself or it's considered an extra benefit.
Oh ok gotcha. But still Anyone can rent an apt. and then rent a room out to anyone else at any price they set. So basically Jarrett was renting a room IMO. I still dont think it should be a problem and the NCAA is freaking ridiculous!

In theory you're right but the person renting is an athlete, NCAA rules apply. The fair market rent on that apartment is nearly 4K so Jarrett has to pay his share of the place and since he and Leinart were the only ones living there, that means half.
I have no doubt Leinart's dad was trying to be a nice guy but I also am quite surprised nobody at USC knew about this, it's pretty standard, they're trying to prevent rich parents from helping recruit or retain athletes by providing them with housing that the average student can't get. The irony of course is if an average student does the same thing, nobody would care if he paid less than half the rent.
Im still fixated on the monthly rent, that had to be one huge apartment. Considering his dad said he rented it because fans were bothering Matt, you gotta wonder how renting a mansion accomplished that?

Still, as Leinart's dad, I would have felt pretty cheap asking some poor college student to pay me more, when I can well afford it and he can't. He did what seemed reasonable -- both students paid an amount, he simply covered the rest.
It's not like some big time agent was paying for a fancy house to secure the kid as a client ...

Believe me I'm not claiming Leinart's dad is a bad guy here, just that someone at USC really dropped the ball, even I knew that would be a violation I have a hard time believing someone on Pete Carroll's staff didn't know it.
It just makes USC look bad again in light of the investigation of where Bush' family lived last year and whether or not THEY paid fair market rent either.
NCAA has some of the stupidest rules in the world. These kids get paid via free ride on schooling. The Univercity makes huge bucks on the players by filling stadiums. This kid simply lived with a nice guys father paying his sons rent and not asking for anything in return. It's time for the NCAA to be fined for just plain being dumb.
FYI turns out the place is only 1600 square feet, it's a very "upscale" apartment complex with a lot of security and stuff, some of the places there go for over 4k a month.
I Seriously hate the NCAA, they are so ridiculous...BFD, students do this all the time... There are plenty of studenst who have rich parentsa that let friends stay there for cheap rent.

This is such a non issue its not even funny...
That's irrelevant unless those students are recruited athletes though.
It's pretty simple, if the NCAA allows stuff like this, schools will be having alumni pay for apartments which was fairly common at one time.
The fault here lies with whoever is responsible for enforcement at USC. how could they have 2 of the highest profile athletes in the school in situations that probably violated NCAA rules, and not know it?

You've obviously never lived in SoCal. Back in 1988-89, I lived in Long Beach and paid almost $1000 for what most would consider a dump.
