Larry English: Is he this year's DeMarcus Ware/Lamar Woodley?
Joeshmo has been touting this kid for quite some time, so I decided to do some research on the kid and he sure sounds like a Lamar Woodley/DeMarcus Ware caliber talent.
Joe, I am curious where you see English going in the first round and would it be worth our while to make a move to trade up and get into position to get this guy.
Sure sounds like you unearthed a gem. Hopefully, the rest of the league will hesitate because he is making a position change from end to outside backer and played at a small school and allow us a shot at him with the 31st pick.

I love the kids athletic ability and potential as a 3-4 LB also. If we are going to get him I really believe we need to be at least in the top 20 picks (trade with Philly?). After the combine his stock will rise and maybe take us out of the running and put him in the top 15. Would give Cards the first 15+ sack artist since Simeon Rice. Reminds me of Ken Harvey. Awesome first few steps off the snap.

I am no Joe, however I believe that we will see English taken in the late teens, early twenties. However, this will be determined by the number of LB's/DE's taken before him. Realistically, there could be 10 LB's/DE's taken in the first round, ranked (loosely) Curry, Orakpo, E Brown, R Maualaga, B Cushing, A Maybin, L English, J Laurinaitis, C Matthews, and C Sintim. Whoever is still available is who I believe that we will take. This is one of the reasons that I believe that Arizona should find a team in the teens to trade Boldin to. If we can add a draft pick in the teens, ala Chicago, we could grab a guy like English there and then possibly add another like Mtthews at 31. At least it would prevent us from having to reach.

English (unfortunately for the Cards) looked too good during the Senior Bowl practices and will be gone for sure before we draft at #31.

i think English is there at 31. I'll be posting a mock later but you'll have in the first round 7-9 OL, 3 QB, 3 RB, 4-5 WR, 1 TE, 2 DT, 8-9 DE/OLB, 2 ILB, 4-5 CB. That's 38 players with possible 1st round grades. Here's the players:
OT-A Smith,Monroe, J Smith, Oher, Britton, Beatty ???
OG- Robinson
C- Mack???, Unger???
QB- Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman ???
RB-Wells, Moreno, McCoy ???
TE-Pettigrew
WR-Crabtree, Maclin, Harvin, Nicks ??, Heyward-Bey ??
DT-Raji, Jerry
DE/OLB- Curry,Cushing,Orakpo,Brown, Maybin, Jackson,Johnson ??, Sintim ??, English ??
ILB-Maualuga, Laurinitis
CB-Jenkins, Davis,Smith A, Moore, Smith S ??
??? means they are late first/early 2nd round guys

Chris Wells and Larry English are my two favorite players in this draft..
We wont get either at 31 though.. maybe is we trade Q for a 15-25 pick we could get one, but that probably wont happen

Good try Cbus Cardsfan but English won't be there when we pick at #31 but I wish he was. Maybe he sucks at the Combine and falls.

I hate to bring up the past BUT not a lot of people thought Mendenhall would of been there when we drafting (even though we picked DRC) So I wouldn't be for so sure that he won't be there.

English is a OLB/DE, Wells is a RB, so not sure how to answer that..
We could probably get English if we find a trade partner in the 15-20 range..
But who knows, he could kill it at the combine, and jump Orakpo and Brown IMO.. he's that gifted..

i think English will be a late 1st or early 2nd rounder. There are too many players at his position that are rated higher. He's a good prospect but he's not an elite propsect. He's kind of like Jason Jones, from the MAC, last year.Playing in the MAC will be a downgrade.

Wanna bet? Have you ever seen this kid play? He doesn't get past 20, unless he has a really bad combine.

How many ASFN bucks do you want to wager? You're also forgetting that he has a injury history as well.
Larry English's Scouting Report
By Matt McGuire
Strengths: Great build: strong and has solid muscle definition ... Consistently impressive statistical production ... Tough, physical ... Gritty player who maximizes his talent on the field; great motor ... Does a great job of anticipating the play and has a sixth sense you look for; Instinctive ... Gives second effort as a pass rusher ... Virtually unstoppable rip move ... Gets leverage and powerfully executes the bull rush ... Nice hand technique at point of attack ... Brings leadership to the table ... Outstanding character off the field.
Weaknesses: Does not have much lateral range ... Lacks flexibility and some balance ... Does not explode off the snap; burst concerns ... Not versatile; strictly a 3-4 outside linebacker ... Maximized body frame? ... Can he pass rush standing up in the 3-4? ... Huge durability concerns.
Summary: English is going to be a safe pick for the 3-4 teams, yet still has some upside in his game. I really do not see a 4-3 team spending a first- or second-round pick on him. English has great intangibles, but they are countered by his long injury history. What you see is what you get, and I am not concerned about him playing against lower level competition. English will likely come off the board in the low first to second round.
Player Comparison: LaMarr Woodley. Woodley had the same high motor, physical style of play coming out of Michigan and has thrived within the Steelers 3-4 scheme.

All I know is that Lamar Woodley was a second round pick but English seems to be more in the mold of Ware who went 11th. I really wanted Woodley in 2007 but I think that was the year we took Branch in the 2nd round. That really worked out for us.
