Kiper comment on this draft etc
Basically on how much better this year is than last.
When you look at last year, I would say right now definitely Bush, Leinart, Mario Williams, Ferguson, Young, Hawk, Vernon Davis, Michael Huff will have higher grades than anyone last year. There may end up being one or two more that are in that mix. There are about 5-6 other players that are on par with last year.
He also said Alex Smith would be no higher rated than the 4th QB behind Leinart, Young and Cutler. Pointed out he made a great decision to come out early because he would have made far less money this year.

but he's basically saying the 10th pick this year will grade out as high as the first pick did last year.

Wouldn't that be as high as the 2nd pick? 8 picks graded higher then last years crop, then 1st pick for 9, and 2nd pick for 10?

And I would guess he is saying that a Cutler is on par with an Alex Smith....I do not think this way at all....sounds like a bad sound bite from Kiper to me. Cutler has more tools than Smith and a stronger arm. IMO

he named 8 guys better than last years #1, said one or two more might be rated that high, and 5-6 on par. So to me that implied that the 10th pick would be at worst on par.

The key is that there are also many good players available in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year. It really is one of the best overall drafts in recent years.

With him listing Smith behind Cutler, it sounds to me like he's saying Cutler is better. how much we don't know. Could be a whole letter grade better, or it could be half a percent.
And, we're talking about Smith as a draft prospect--not what he has or hasn't done as a pro. Last year he was the #1 rated QB.
Don't read too much into it.

It isn't a total foregone conclusion that the "Kiper 8" will be the first 8 guys drafted. Teams do strange things on Draft Day*

Note that Cutler wasn't included in those 8 players, but that he is a better prospect than Smith.
