Gaither could be available for less than first round pick
Gaither could be available for less than first round pick
Time is running out for teams to sign restricted free agent Ravens tackle Jared Gaither to an offer sheet, but he may be available for less than his first round tender.
NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, citing two Ravens sources, said Monday an offer of a "high second round" pick would get a team's foot in the door.
La Canfora suggests the Redskins as a possibility. If Washington didn't draft a tackle in the first round, they could potentially send their second round pick for Gaither.
There would be no April 15 deadline to sign Gaither to an offer sheet because it would be a straight trade.
By all accounts, Gaither played like a quality starting left tackle last year. That's why it's surprising Baltimore seems so open to moving him.
Would it be worthwhile to check into what the Ravens would really take? They may take less than a second.
We have already worked with them on the Boldin trade. Gaither is a bonafide LT.

We should have just drafted Gaither when he came into the supplemental draft. Then we could have drafted Adrian Peterson instead of reaching for Levi Brown.

I was all for using a 5th in the supplemental draft for him also. I think that's what the Ravens gave up.
But I still think we should try to work a deal. Not a first rounder, but maybe a 3rd this year and a 5th next year?

We should have drafted Tom Brady instead of Jabari Issa in the 6th round of the 2000 draft!

There's no way that Baltimore would go for it, and the Cards would have to shell out the contract.
He's going to be a FA next year. If we still need him, he'll be out there. But right now the Cards have to find out what they have in Brandon Keith.

That's easy to say if you're not someone who was saying that the Cards should draft Jared Gaither at the time.

I think they see that Michael Oher can play that position, and they drafted Oniel Cousins a couple years ago, who they may think can play RT for them next season.

Wonder if they would be interested in Lutui or Wells and a late round pick?
Better to go after Gaither than an unknown OT in the draft. Then we have 3 OT's on the roster with Brown, Keith and Gaither. Bridges can play also. Then we start Hadnot at one guard and let the rest battle for the other spot. I know the FO is high on Keith, but he still is an unknown at this time.

Unknown to us... not necessarily unknown to the coaching staff.

They probably know that Oher will be better and should be moved from RT to LT

It could be a lot of things. It could be that the Ravens are going the cheaper route. Yes even the Ravens do this. Meaning bang for the buck. If you have 3 players of similar talent and only two positions to fill, which 2 out of the 3 players can fill those two positions the cheapest?
Or they could just be exploring possibilities with no real effort put into place, like we did with Boldin last year.
