Emmitt on Dallas 2002: "A diamond surrounded by trash."

New Cardinals RB airs out gripes in interview

ESPN.com news services

SAN ANTONIO – Emmitt Smith told Sports Illustrated that breaking the NFL career rushing record was his only highlight of the 2002 season, the Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

Smith, now with the Arizona Cardinals, told the magazine that last season "was the worst year I ever went through playing football. Too much damn drama. Too much selfishness by too many guys on the team. Too much media frenzy around the team," according to the paper.

"People always looking to me for answers, and I didn't have the answers for them about why we were so bad. It felt like being a diamond surrounded by trash," Smith said to the magazine, according to the report.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that he was unaware of the depth of Smith's frustrations.

"He never showed his frustration, he just tried to do anything he could to help us win ball games," Jones said to the paper Thursday. "That's the way he has always been.

"If you can have a highlight when you win five games, he certainly was the highlight and arguably the highlight of the last 14 years."

Last season, Smith finished under 1,000 yards rushing for the first time since his rookie season in 1990. He broke Walter Payton's all-time rushing yardage record with a 109-yard outing against Seattle at Texas Stadium.

"It was just a mental grind," Smith told the magazine about the season, according to the Morning News. "When I got the record, it was like God said, 'I'm going to give you one moment this year.' "

Smith was released by the Cowboys in February and signed a two-year deal for about $8 million to play for the rebuilding Cardinals, who lost their starting quarterback and top wide receiver and running back from last year.

The Cowboys head to Arizona for a preseason contest on Aug. 9 and the Cardinals and Smith make a regular season visit to Dallas on Oct. 5.

Ya think this might piss off some of the Dallas fans and players?

Nothing like a little bulletin board material for an otherwise meaningless preseason game!

If this was a former Cards player, I know we'd be going ballistic. Everything said by Rice, Jones, etc, pales by comparison IMO.

SI has no more credibility than a supermarket tabloid with a picture of a 5 inch newborn doing the "RiverDance" on the palm of his mothers hand.

They gave up on accurate reporting a long time ago.

If it's a misquote, it's one hell of a misquote. That's not a paraphrase.

So you are saying what? SI made this up? I doubt it!

If this is true, I think it is very classless!

They can have the bulletin board material beingg that Emmit will likely play for one series. If they get a first down he probably wont play longer than that. Im curious to see how sparingly they use Shipp in the pre-season?

IMO he should be treated as a starter as far as reps go to not risk injury?

agreed. If this were Simeon Rice or Jake Plummer - this thread would be 10 pages by now saying what a class;ess piece of absolute crap they were. Leaders and vet presence don't bag on other squads - I really hope he IS able to keep Shipp off the field the entire season - because if Shipp starts taking time away I sure as hell don't want a former enemy playing the role of cancer on our own team.

Ive said this since before we signed him. He was complaining in Dallas and the second he starts losing carries here and probably rightfully so HE WILL COMPLAIN!

No, it could very well be true.

I'm saying that I am skeptical of anything SI puts into print, and as such, I never visit their website or look at their magazines.

They are more concerned with finding "facts" that will fit their preconcieved story ideas rather than finding out the truth. It is amazing how far an "unamed source" can take you.

There's no way this doesn't come up on October 5 as well.

These comments were plain stupid. This sort of stuff needs to be kept to yourself.

Yeah I dont read it either, but even if part of it is complete fabrication the rest of it is bad enough...

Regardless Emmitt should have just shut the hell up!

We should be so lucky. This is a direct quote from Smith, not an "unnamed source".

I have no trouble whatsoever in what Emmitt said . !st of all it was the truth. The Cowboys were the worst offensive football team in the league last year, without Emmitt they wouldn't have even been a good offensive college team. When he got his walking papers from the "Boys he didn't just walk away, HE RAN like the Emmitt of old.
