Of all idiotic moves by the Cards over the years, letting Davis walk without compensation or a viable replacement especially in the currect FA market, it will go up to near the top of those idiotic moves.
Considering the upcoming FA market and current set of conditions in the cap market, Franchising him, telling his agent to go get a contract from other teams then grab your draft picks and or players from that team and it will be the easiest trade the Cards have ever made.
You dont want to keep him, fine, but you sure as heck better get your easy compensation for him.

Hasn't it been stated and realized by people all over the league that he's not playing the right position, and therefore not achieving as greatly as he should?

Kinda like letting Kendall walk without compensation. This would, however, be an even greater blunder.

1. I don't remember Davis EVER being dominant.
2. I really don't see how Davis has all of a sudden been the biggest player we have ever had here in Arizona.
How about when we let Jamir Miller walk? How about when we let Simeon Rice walk? How about when we let Otis Anderson walk?
It seems to me that this thing is getting way out of hand.
Rumor has it Big doesn't like playing for this team and he wants to leave. His contract is up and he is an unrestricted free agent. The only power this organization has is to franchise him. If we do that he will probably hold out.
I really think this is getting overblown. I think Davis is very replace-able and if he walks it is not a BIG deal.

Good teams like the Patriots let guys walk when they have a guy ready to take his spot. The Cards, on the other hand, lets guys walk and then decide to go out and find a replacement.
They need to tag Davis unless they have some other guy drafted or signed to fill his shoes. As far as I know, they do not.

So what do they do if they tag him, and he holds out/demands a trade ?

If they tag him and Davis holds out -- they've got trade bait. There's no one else that they're looking to tag as this time; what's the downside?

They can trade him and considering the complete lack of Olineman on the market they could get something good in return or if worse comes to worse they can rescind the tag.
Letting him go without a plan and we've got back to the loser program we've been over the past couple of years

First of all he will not hold out on 11+ mill franchise tag that once signed is gauranteed. He wont walk away or hold out from that.
Second of all I dont think people really understand just how bad the UFA market will be this offseason and how much so Davis will be in demand in that market. If the Cards cant pull off that trade in the upcoming cirumstances then they truley are the biggest losers in all of pro sports.

That was yesterday, this is today.
Totally different set of circumstances, totally different FA market, totally different cap economics.

Worst case scenario, you are stuck with a decent tackle at not much more than he makes now, for another year. WORST CASE. It is a freaking no-brainer, and personally this is the final test of the changes in the Bidwill philosophy...can they make the risky play (even when the risk is hardly a risk at all) and do the right thing? I will be SHOCKED if they don't tag Big.
