Coryell's "stable" of RB's...
What makes a GREAT team?? I'd say it's a combination of coaching, talent, & chemistry. A team where each player knows his role and excels at it. It seems that, like their namesakes, the Cardinals have always moved better thru the air. From Charley Johnson to Sonny Randle and Bobby Joe Conrad; From Jim Hart to Mel Gray, Dave Williams, & Jackie Smith; From Neil Lomax to Roy Green and Pat Tilly, and now from Kurt Warner to Q, Fitz', and Stevie "Wonder".
BUT I remember Coryell referring to his stable of running-backs this way. We had Donny Anderson-The "Golden Palamino". He was past his prime but still brought to the team the intangibles of a winner. We had Terry Metcalf who Coryell referred to as his Thoroughbred. He brought the speed that all defenses feared. We had Jimmy Otis--The old plow-horse. Little speed and even less shiftiness but his power-style of running was still good for 4-5 yards a carry. (I think he even WON the rushing title one year with around 1,100 yards) ...And we had Steve Jones. I don't recall Coryell giving him a name but he was our 3rd down specialist. ...And he was GREAT at it!
My point is: Each player knew their role and excelled at it. BUT as the present-day Cards continue to grow into a Championship team, some roles will change. (ie; Edge's role as the featured-back) BUT the end result will be worth it. A Championship! GO CARDS!
