Cardinals Sign C Kyle Schmitt

Cardinals Sign C Kyle Schmitt
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, January 19, 2006

Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has signed center Kyle Schmitt for the 2006 season and allocated him to NFL Europe.

Schmitt (6-4, 295) originally signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie free agent last April out of Maryland and was released on August 29 during training camp. The former Terrapin appeared in 48 games during his college career with 28 starts at center and was a two-time Rimington Award candidate recognizing college football’s best center.

The Cardinals have allocated six players (Schmitt, TE Ben Hall, DE Tyler King, QB Jeff Otis, RB Roger Robinson, and TE Andy Stokes) to NFL Europe. NFL Europe kicks off its 14th season on March 15.

This sure looks like a move that was recommeded by our new offensive line coach Steve Loney. He must think this guy has lots of potential. Nothing to lose on this and will bring in some competition in training camp.

"..And in this corner.."

Why didn't DG go after Mike Tice as an Offensive coach for the Cards?

Probably because he wouldn't accept, and who is to say Denny didn't give him a call to inquire if he was interested?

I'm sure Tice is trying to land one of the two head coaching jobs left.

Thanks a lot Green. I'm sure Tice was just juicing with the excitement of being the Cardinals OLine coach. All you had to do was call him. Thanks Coach.

Yeah, remember Tice was reportedly the runner-up for the Jets job. Green probably didn't want to wait to fill the OLine spot and risk having nobody qualified remaining.

If Green really wants Tice and he doesn't get offered a head coach position somewhere maybe he can get one of those Quality Control-Offensive Assistant(make up any title here)/Asst Head Coach type of positions.

True. It would be Asst. Head Coach. Quality Control is usually what the real newbie young coaches are.

Kind of like this guy: http://www.azcardinals.com/team/coach_bio.html?iid=156

It's a B.S. title and the lowest of the coaching jobs -- no low quality items get by him, right?

Maybe because we already have an offensive coordinator?

Mike Tice coming to this team at any position would concern me. He may or may not have been a good Oline coach but he was not a good Head coach. If he is on the staff in any capacity then he would be in line to take over for Denny when he retires or gets fired.
