Camp Report #2 08/02/09
Practice in the way it was run and the drills and format was identical to Saturdays. It started with them working on Punt coverage while the PR people were practicing catching punts. They were primarily Breaston(who was back practicing) Garvin, Rolle and GASP Fitz. He caught three punts and looked pretty natural doing it. IM pretty sure this was just for fun and not for the possibility of actually doing it.
After this they again did warm-ups and I watched Fitz stop doing "trunk twisters" and walk over right to Q and grab him in the open space in between his shoulder pads and pecs and pull him right close to him. They were clowning and had huge smiles on their faces. Then Fitz put his head right into Q's chest for a good four seconds. All the while they were both laughing. Not that this has any consequence on practice and how it went. Just shows the comraderie these two share and you can see that they genuinely like each other. You know that when Fitz was telling Q that he wasnt going anywhere and that they need him and want him here Fitz truly meant it. These two guys like and respect one another that is obvious and good to see IMO.
During the famous running routes in the square that they have done the last two years where the coach throws them the ball as soon as they come out of the breaks Lance Long showed some kink in his armor. He dropped two passes right in his chest. Garvin Dropped 2 right on the hands. Q dropped one however that ball was thrown behind him and would have had to one hand it in order to make the catch. None the less we have seen him make those before so he doesnt get a pass.
During another part of drills where the WR's were practicing routes and how to break from the CB at the LOS and having the ball thrown to them. Q literally stopped the drill and told the coach to hold on. He went over to Garvin who was having much trouble and told him exactly what to do and explained it then demonstrated it. He was really taking the time to coach this kid up. Then the drill proceeded as normal. Was good to see IMO and shows that Q is interested in whats going on. Also has something to do with being a FSU alum too.
The QB's were again trying to toss the ball into the trash cans in the corner. Practicing that endzone corner fade. All of the QB's were able to pin the can once. St. Pierre was the best at it though on 4 other occasions just hitting the rim and bouncing off.
Then they were throwing at the bottom of the goalpost from 20 yards to see who could hit it. Warner hit it everytime and was the only one to do so. The others werent bad though.
During WR vs CB drills Fitz dropped a perfect pass right in his chest. It was the first drop I saw in two days. So he is entitled. HE was being covered by DRC.
Garvin dropped another easy one right in his chest but made up for it about 5 minutes later by getting one right in the bread basket for a TD on a fly pattern.
Breaston burned Mcfadden deep for a TD and Doucet was MUCH MUCH better today and was as crisp looking as he was last camp.
DL vs OL drills were not as good today. Dockett and Deuce squared off again and out of three Dockett got the best of Deuce 2 times. The normal characters werent participating in this today. They were over taking part in the 7 on 7 drills that were also taking place on the other field.
During that 7 on 7 Jeremy Urban just continues to make amazingly wonderful catches. I mean AMAZING. First was a beautiful over the head bomb(not shoulder but head) thats where most WR's lose sigth of the ball. Not Urban he pulle dit in beautifully and scored a TD. Two plays later he literally jumped over the defender making his body horiszontal in the air caught the ball and landed flat on his back on a 40 yard throw. Another amazing catch that had the crowd OOING and AWWING.
Rashad Johnson had a near INT jumping a crossing route. MAtt Ware had a nice INT on another crossing route by Breaston. Warner was throwing on both.
11 on 11 was next and Warner in both 7 on 7 with the two plays above and in 11 on 11 was just not sharp today at all.
On one good pass play though MCfadden just blanketed Fitz on a sideline deep ball. He went after the ball and beat Fitz to the ball and tipped it up and made the INT. It was a really nice play.
Doucet made a beautiful catch while being interfered with by Gerald Hayes.
Warner threw a pass to Q that went right into Carlos Dansby's hands. He dropped the ball but it should have been 6 points going the other way. He immediately dropped down and did 10 push ups for the blunder. The crowd razzed him and thought the push ups were great.
Warner threw at least 3 pics today and could have had at least three more if players didnt drop the ball. Very uncharacteristic of him obviously.
Overall it was another good day of practice. They finished up doing wind sprints.
Again it was good to hang out with jw7 and it was also good to run into both Jersey Girl and Chris Sanders while up there as well. That was a nice surprise.
Hope you all like the write up. I usually am in camp for 5 to 7 days every year. But this year was only 2 days due to other engagements/trips I'm taking. Sorry there wont be anymore form me at least.
Shane

Fitz and Boldin have the chance to be the best tandem ever to play this game. Better than Swan and Stallworth by alot if they both have big years again. We need to take it all though for that argument.

Leinart looked like the best QB today in my opinion. I was close enough to hear the coaches instructions and Leinart was following them to the T, especially on keeping the pass low.
Leinart hit the trashcan on every 3 out of 4 throws.
At the end of practice, Warner, Leinart, and the QB from Pittsburgh were putting in extra work with the receivers. St. Pierre had his jersey off and just watched.
A guy next to me who didn't like Leinart said "Why can't Leinart be this accurate all the time" and agreed he looked great today.

Is it nerves with Garvin or is he overmatched in the talent area as to why he keeps messing up? Chance for the Practice squad?

Guys that impressed me today:
Ben Graham was absolutely KILLING punts. Like 50-60 yards.
Tim Hightower ran hard and with authority. He has no intention of surrendering that starting job. A funny play was Bertrand came at Tim while he was running and Tim blasted him with the shoulder and kept going. Berry looked amazed that he would be hit so hard.
Herman Johnson stood up every guy he faced during pass rush drills. Immovable.
Darnell Dockett destroyed Ben Coleman and Dominic Riaola during the same drills. Dockett was clearly the best D Lineman today.
Steve Breaston looks so fast and fluid. There was a drill where the QBs would all throw to a different receiver and Breaston caught two TD passes (one with each hand) when either Leinart or St. Pierre threw to the wrong guy.
Leinart looked great except for a fumbled snap.
