It used to be that the rookie QB would watch, study, and practise for serveral years after being drafted. Most HOF QB's have been "raised" this way.
It is a relatively recent tendency to draft your rookie QB and push him into service; for the Cardinals, Jake was an example that was rushed to duty, mostly because what we had as a starter was other team's washed-up back up.
Rushing a QB in can be dangerous; Ryan Leaf comes to mind...maybe Alex Smith...this might be worth a little research and a whole seperate thread.
I can safely say that Warner is niether washed-up nor posting back-up numbers; yet he has to show that his not too old a dog to learn and improve on managing the game and protecting the ball.
Strange, but even though Matt wants to start, he has not earned it. 10 years ago he would have been told to "STF Rookie".
I hate when Bickley makes a good point.
I dont agree with the notion that it is only a recent trend to push young QBs into the starting job. The pressure to win has always been there and head coaches have always done what increases there chance to win. Lomax was drafted in '81 and was named the starter for final 6 games of the season. '82 he was named the starter for the season.

I bet by game 4 Matt is looking decent to good with Kurt coming in like the start of this season, or he struggles again and gets benched in favor of the "master"......just hope if the latter occurs we aren't 0-4 when it happens. My hope is Matt's play keeps Kurt on the bench......
Coach Whiz has already sat one first rounder in A.Rolle when he got beat out in training camp, and if Leinart comes into camp and doesn't look good Warner will get his shot.
Plus that was a BIG assumption about T.Holt giving his brother "inside information" on our QB situation. Plus when it comes to T.Holt the Cardinals best chance to win is if he gets lost on his way to the stadium.
You eventually have to see what you got in Matt Leinart and since Warner is getting VERY old at this point it makes sense to start the younger guy.
Plus I don't see how the locker room would become divided since the team had TWO QB's playing at the start of the year and there were no gripes about it.
I think this team believes in thier coach and doesn't care who plays were as long as they win.
But as I read in some of the post before....nothing the media likes better than a QB contriversy so this will be talked about for the next 365.

Leinart isn't a rookie. He will be going into his third year next season. He hasn't played a lot of games, but he has had two years to watch and learn. Eventually, you have to play him to see what he's got.
Matt isn't going to learn any more sitting on the bench, IMO.
Right now, I say this is all good. Leinart is no dummy. He knows Warner finished the season as a top 10 passer in the NFL. I truly believe that will light a fire under his ass to work harder than he ever has before.

I think ML played like crap before he got hurt. I was beginning to wonder myself if this guy was going to live up to the hype. Maybe ML will live up to the hype but his play leading up to the injury showed no confidence or focus.
Every time I saw Warner come in for some reason I had more confidence in our offense. That is not a good thing when as a fan you keep telling yourself "put Warner in". At the very least, ML could use the fire and fear of losing his job in training camp.
If this article were written by Somers I would have found it WAY more credible. But it wasn't so I won't. He basically wrote a synopsis about the other 17,000 topics written on the other Cardinal forum. Threads started by "Cardinal Fans" who do nothing more than rip ML and Coach Whiz, by calling ML the next Ryan Leaf and Whiz a "putz" with no facts to back it up. This QB "controversy" is crap and come Sept. the QB that gives us the best chance to win will be on the field.
I hope to God it's ML because that means this team will be successful for more than one season. The thought of looking for another QBOF and setting this franchise back another 5 years with this much talent makes me want to cry.

Kent Somers, whose recent articles tend to resemble dictation for Bidwill and Leinart, doesn't have much credibility. He is attempting a balancing act of maintaining access with those who control the access (the cards' organization) and being objective at the same time.
Lately, though, he just comes across as a Bidwill organization lapdog.
Bickley is not covering the Cards as a beat writer, so he's free to write as he sees fit. And he's free to use his pen to defend the best interests of the fans (winning) against the best interests of the Bidwills (slick "face of the franchise" marketing schemes, etc.).
Thank God we have Bickley going to bat for us fans -- and not afraid to stand up to an organization that has shown so little interest in putting a winner on the field for us -- but has put a high level of interest in taking our money.

This same old Bidwill's crap is tired. If you excuse me...

I'm guessing Warner always makes time for Bickley after the games or Leinart didn't add him to the VIP list at Axis/Radius because we have been subjected to Warner fluff pieces via print and radio for months on a almost daily basis.
Posters: Who the "HELL" is this Idiot, for "PETE"S" sake we all know Leinart is our future or we have to start over. Hey, Kurt has been great but, get real his age is working against him. Whiz, did the right thing. Does anybody pay any attention to this guy?
