Anyone still think Leinart will be signed on time?
I posted a few weeks back that I believed Leinart will not be signed on time. The reasons I stated then are starting to surface. John Clayton of espn reported that there could be a major hold up of the top 11 picks because of the 2 qb's taken at 10 an 11.
In my previous post I stated that the Cards would have to disregard "slotting" Leinart if they were going to get him in camp on time. We were going to have to pay him more money than the #9 pick( Ernie Sims) because qb's are considered more valuable and the QB position is a higher paying position. This is the stand that Leinart and his agent will take.
The CArds management will of coarse take a position that 1st round picks fall into their slot and thats what they should receive.
I don't think the Cards are going to drastically overpay just to get him in camp on time, nor do I think Leinart and his agent will accept anything drastically below what they feel they deserve just to get into camp on time.
Add that to the fact that the Cards are really not considering Leinart to play a major role this year and you have a recipe for a holdout perhaps even longer than we'd like to think.
The only thing I see that could speed things up is if the Bronco's get Cutler signed. His contract would then set a starting point for both the Cards and Leinart.
In the recent past this has not been a problem. Graves has done a perfect job in getting our picks signed and in on time. But this is a different scenario. I, and I believe most of us, certainly don't want to see us give him half the Grand Canyon to get him signed. Yet on the other hand I think management needs to accept the fact that they are going to have to shell out a few more bucks than if we would have taken a DE or OL with the #10 pick.
Leinart and his agent needs to accept the fact that they won't get more than Vince Young and they won't get what they would have had Leinart been the #4 pick.
Until this happens I'm not planning on seeing to much of Leinart for the 1st half of August.
I'm not playing the role as The King of Doom, it's just the way I see things shaping up.
Okay.....fire away.

What makes you think they're going to demand #4 money?
I think he'll be signed within the first week of camp. I haven't seen anything of late that makes me think it will be delayed.

Cmon Pariah. If you were representing Leinart wouldn't you try and get your guy the most you could which would be arguably "a little " less that what the 1st qb taken got?
I'm not saying they will be asking for #4 money. I did say that Leinart and his agent need to realize that they won't receive what the #4 pick will get just because they feel that he should get close to what Vince Young eventually signs for.
In fairness to the Cards it may very well turn out that the three qb's will be the last of the 1st rounders to sign.

Yup. So does every agent for every player--it how the system works. I still don't undertand why you're convinced he'll be a long hold out.

Believe me. I hope I'm am dead wrong. I'm not convinced he'll hold out. It's just the way the stars seem to be lining up. Besides what the heck else are we going to talk about until July 30th?

Unlike previous first round picks, we don't need Lienart to play right away so I'm not worried if he doesn't make training camp on time.

exactly. Deuce is in camp, get Pope in there on time & I'm happy. Leinart will sign when Leinart signs, I'm not going to worry about it.

I think that's sort of what the Cards are thinking also and Leinarts agent knows that Matt won't be a starter therefore they are not in a 'desperate' situation to sign him. Leinart even mentioned something to the effect of that in an interview recently (I don't have a link to it) All things considered, this is one time I am not concerend if there is a hold-out.

Either he will be or he won't be. This issue is not at the top of my list of things to obsess over.

Leinart will sign on time. He realizes that it is important for him to demonstrate "team first".....if he was motivated solely by money, he'd have come out last year.
While not from a "silver spoon" background, his parents do have money. He has already bought a home in AZ and knows that his payday will come when it's time to write up his second contract.
I have zero worries about him in this regard.

Signing Leinart
When Pope and Watson sign, Leinart will "get" what ever is left in the rookie pool. If he signs for more years then he gets more money. But he can't get more just because he's a QB. Now if the team "undercut" their other draftees in order to give Matt more, then that's another issue. But I doubt if the others would have signed for less than what last year's players received in the same slot, plus the Cap increase.

I don't see an issue here. I think there is more pressure on Matt than on the team. He needs to get in an learn the system and get reps and to be visible. He needs to prove him self and start playing for endorsement dollars and his second contract which I'm sure he hopes will be an early extension like Q's).
There is only so much money there when you are the last pick to sign amongst the rookie pool and it's not the teams fault that he wasn't picked in the top nine slots. For once the Cards are not working from an inferior position.
