I disagree with this. While we don't need him to play right away, does anyone think Warner is going to make 16 straight games without injury?
He needs to get into camp, learn the system, and more importantly get some preseason experience playing NFL football. The first preseason game is less than a month away and he needs to be throwing in game one and not on the sidelines.

I personally think Pope and Watson will be tougher to sign than Leinart. Just a hunch, but it's how I think this will play out. Both of those players know that Cards are counting on them this season, so they may try to take advantage of that.

It's really not that hard guys. These rookies all get minimum salaries with the maximum amount of signing bonus to fit their cap number in the rookie pool. It's extremely rare that a guy drafted later gets a larger amount than that. We did it with BJ, but signed Pace just a couple of days later by making up the difference with a roster bonus for the next season.
The Cards and Leinart just have to work out what the future incentives and bonuses will be. At one point, that was a huge problem for this franchise. With some guys, like Wendell Bryant and LJ Shelton, we refused to do anything besides a straight deal. But, that's not the case anymore. It's going to get done. I'd be happy if he signed before camp, but I'm not worried if it takes a few days to get it done.

I was going to type the same thing while i was reading the first page. It would be a huge mistake if he is not signed. Warner usually gives you 10 starts. Leinart will play this year and im sure everyone in the cards organization knows it. He needs to learn the system, get familar with Q, fitz, and Edge and most definately play this pre-season. If he holds out and warner gets hurt we will be saying "well theres always next year" again.

As long as Matt is signed in enough time to get some work in all 4 of the preseason games I will be a happy camper. Which probably means he will have to practice a few days before that Pitt game in order for the coaches to even think about playing him for a few series. So my cut off date before I get pissed off in a hold out is the night of August the 9th which means he is in camp by August 10th.
As for the Pope and Watson they will without a doubt be in to camp on time. It isnt even a question. Lets get real, how many 3rd or 4th rounders have ever been involved in a hold out.

He only makes up that portion of the 1% that have in the past and thats the point.
And Mark Smith and his agents were complete idiots combined with the Cards hay day of contract ineptitude. Not a good combo.

Mark Smith did not hold out on his rookie deal. He held out before the deal was up, and then held out as a tendered restricted free agent the next season.

He didn't hold out on his rookie contract joe. The Cards did draft a DT in the sixth round back in the early to mid 90s who refused to sign his deal and just got another job besides football. His name was Mike Hold, from New Hampshire.

When was the last time that happened?
2005 - Rolle - badly needed to start
2004 - Fitz - didn't desperately need him to start, but BJ was not sufficient as a #2.
2003 - Pace and Johnson were both "need" picks. Both started
2002 - Wendell "stink up the field" Bryant was desperately needed on the dline.
2001 - Big was a day one starter
2000 - TJ was counted on to start
1999 - was this Wads? I start getting fuzzy since I wasn't on the net much before 2000.
When was the last time that we didn't have the 1st rounder penciled in as a day one starter as soon as they called his name from the podium?

I for one hope that Leinart is our 3rd string QB & NEVER sees the field during the regular season. I'll be shocked if Warner goes through the season uscathed, so I'd rather have Navarre playing than Leinart. Why do we want to rush this kid? Navarre has a big arm & would do just fine in this offense. What the Bengals did with Carson Palmer was pure genious. I hope the Cardinals do the same.

If Navarre is #2 we are in trouble. He has shown nothing that says "he will be fine" Leinart better be the #2 or something is wrong.

I'm with you, PACardsFan. If Warner goes down, I want to see Navarre step in. And I'd love to see him actually get to play for two or three complete games...just to see if he can do what Green says he can do. I keep hearing that Leinart is the Next Great QB but he hasn't proved it yet on this level. Give him time, let him learn. When I watched the So Cal games, I discovered that Leinart can do good when he's got lots of time. Pushed hard, he rattled. The rushing game gave USC the victory against Arizona -- Leinart looked very ordinary.

What chance has Navarre had to show anything. He broke his finger in the 1st half of his only start & then had mop-up duty in another game. As bad as our OL has been, what could anyone expect. The last thing this organization needs is Warner going down in week 3 & Leinart being thrust into a situation he's not ready for. Navarre could easily lead this team to 9 or 10 wins. Leinart will be great real soon, but I hope we don't need him this year.
