80 yard punt

Had to post this just because I hadn't seen it until just now. Lechler punted the ball over Devin Hester's head on Sunday, even though Hester was 55 yards deep. The ball traveled 80 yards from kick to when it hit the ground.

Randall Cunningham punting from the back of the endzone. The vid cuts off but the punt went to the 10 yard line IIRC meaning it went nearly 100 yards.

Lechler's punt beats both of those, IMO. His distance was less due to roll than the other two. About half of Cunningham's punt is roll. Plus, it was in Oakland where the air is heavy and balls don't travel very well, the polar opposite of Denver.

The Wildcats punter had the best one. LA is pretty damn near sea level and it was on grass not hard turf, plus it was downed at the 1. Punting threads are awesome btw, special teams never gets the credit they deserve. Remember the SD/Indy playoff game the year we went to the Super Bowl. Chargers punter Mike Scifres downed 6 punts inside the 15 yard line and was a major reason they won that game.

They had an article a year or two ago in SI about punters and described in detail a game in which Ray Guy totally dominated the game through punting and field position.

Yeah the only "Bad" thing about the Lechler punt is it's a touchback but mainly because his coverage couldn't run fast enough to cover 80 yards. I watched it live it was incredible how far that ball went in the air.

It wasn't raining but it was cool air I almost wonder if they had just warmed the ball I know they do that for balls that get punted or kicked.

Guy was more hangtime than distance though but he was crazy good. 1st round pick to boot.

Yep, was probably the best punter in history, and he's not even in the HOF.

(Are there any punters in the HOF, I'm still at work and can't look it up. And when I say punters I don't mean dudes like Blanda or something, who played both ways and every position, I mean an actual punter, drafted as a punter).

**Nevermind, I looked it up, there aren't any punters in the HOF.
