#7 overall Peterson signs, #6 Landry is "close"

VIKES LAND ADRIAN

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Vikings have agreed to terms with running back Adrian Peterson, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2007 draft.

Per Schefter, Peterson has signed a five-year, $40 million contract, with $17 million in guaranteed money.

Peterson is the latest player drafted in the top 16 picks to sign a deal for less than the maximum term of six years.

The annual average of $8 million is actually greater than the average value of LaDanian Tomlinson's contract, who signed nearly three years ago an eight-year, $60 million deal.

LANDRY DEAL CLOSE?

Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins and safety LaRon Landry, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2007 draft, are close to agreement on a contract.

It would be unusual for Landry to do a deal before a contract is signed by the guys taken in front of and behind him, Levi Brown (No. 5) and Adrian Peterson (No. 7). Landry's agent, Joel Segal, has a reputation among agents for waiting to see what the player taken in front of or behind his clients gets, which reduces the chances of doing what in hindsight will be regarded as a bad deal.

Landry has missed three practices, and is expected to be a starter in the secondary.

Is not Segal Brown's agent also? Does this mean he is waiting on himself because he doesn't trust what he might do with the Cards?

Segal's two bad scenarios are these:

1. A deal signed at #7 on down makes #5 and #6 look bad. Well -- we have been calibrating Levi's guaranteed money at somewhere between $16.4 and $17.0 mm. Peterson just got $17 mm guaranteed at #7. Assuming its real, this doesnt help the Cards (or the Redskins).

2. Have the contracts at #5 and #6 be out of whack with one another. He has to protect himself from either Brown or Landry being unhappy with him because the other guy got a better deal relative to his draft slot. Because of this, I think that Segal is keeping both contracts moving at the same pace, and I think Brown and Landry will sign within hours of one another.

Not to be a downer, but I think the Peterson deal has the potential to delay things, not speed them up.

I think so too. Adams signed for 18.56 million guaranteed with 46 million overall. Peterson signed for 17mil and 40. That does narrow it quite a bit, and if the Cards want to work within those numbers I'm sure it canget done quickly.

The problem will come if Graves insists on Hawk's deal as a baseline in spite of this year's deal. Or, if Segal insists on more than Adams. Then it will get ugly.

Huff's deal last year (the #7 overall) had $15 mm in guaranteed money.

Peterson's at #7 this year got a reported $17mm in guaranteed money, or a 13% increase over last year. The cap went up 7%.

Peterson's deal appears rich, and Segal will gladly use that as the benchmark, rather than Hawk's deal last year.

From PFT (take it for what it's worth)--looks like it could be a long haul:

Quote:
PETERSON DEAL SLOWS DOWN LANDRY TALKS
Earlier today, it was reported that a deal between the Redskins and No. 6 overall pick LaRon Landry could come at any minute.
But now that the guy taken at No. 7 has been signed, the Landry deal necessarily will be delayed. Why? Because league insiders expect agent Joel Segal to get a copy of the Peterson and then use it as the floor for the Landry deal.
"Must be nice to get paid and not do any work," one league insider quipped.
Segal then can take the Landry deal and use it as the floor for the contract for another of his clients, Cardinals tackle Levi Brown, the No. 5 overall pick in the draft. (Thanks to the reader who pointed out to us today that Segal has both Landry at No. 6 and Brown at No. 5.)
(note--was that one of our guys here who mentioned that?)

The problem with comparing these so called guaranteed numbers is that its the same as comparing apples to oranges.

The totals don't say much at all as even thought it says "guaranteed" it doesn't mean guaranteed. Only the signing bonus is truly guaranteed, with the rest being roster bonus is only guaranteed if you are still on the team come year 2, 3, or 4 and so on.

What is the signing bonus and what is the roster bonus for future years and in what years are they earned? What are the escalators, how hard are they to get or how easy are they to get can also effect the total of the bonus. Now that is how you can compare them.

Comparing the totals or percentages between slots or last years picks and so on just doesn't work with top 10 picks because there contracts are way to creative and complex to be able to do that. And trying to will just give you a headache, trust me. There is just no rhyme or reason to the slotting for the top 10 picks.

By the way I still say he is signed by tomorrow.
