I.D. badges are long overdue. Security in this office park is a joke. Last year, I came to work with my spud gun in a duffel bag. I sat at my desk all day, with a rifle that shoots potatoes at 60 pounds per square inch. Can you imagine if I was deranged? - Dwight K. Schrute
My Mom has loosely been following The South Beach Diet...She looks great and has a lot of energy.
I'm thinking about trying it so I read a little bit about it and went through the meal plans while traveling back to AZ. It sounds like a good plan and I was just wondering if any of you guys have tried it or read about it - if so what do you think?

Just thought I'd peep in and see how everyone was doing.
A couple of comments to add my 2 cents on a couple of things.
For those of you who are/have stepped up your workout regimen,
keep in mind that there very well could be an "early stage" plateau in dropping some weight due to the fact that you ARE converting some adipose (fat) tissue to muscle tissue. Muscle tissue is more dense, and there fore what you are losing in fat, may be being replaced by muscle, yet you see no weight drop yet.
Hang in there. As a higher and highter percentage of your body weight becomes muscle, not only are you better "physically fit" in that sense, but muscle tissue burns calories much more efficiently than fat tissue, so eventully the increased muscle will burn more calories "per unit" or "cell".
Walking not only burns calories but exercises the cardio-vascular system too. Never underestimate the good that it too can do in helping your body stabilize to its healthiest composition.
You do not have to be a "workout" warrior to reap the necessary weight loss benefits of exercise.
Naturally the more calories you do burn, the faster the fat stores in your body are converted. The "secret" to weight loss is to simply burn more calories than you ingest. Health-wise that doesn't mean eliminate caloric intake too much. You do need that intake.
Digestion and assimilation is still the most effecient form of energy production the body has.
The biggest calorie concern should be that of carbs. They are what "put the weight on" the most because they are the primary energy producers. Proteins and Fats require the utilization of more energy just to digest.
Don't confuse restricting caloric intake with not eating. You still need all your nutrient groups for optimal body function.....
Carbohydrates
Dietary Fat (mainly be concerned about trans-fatty acids- they are the real trouble makers to your body)
Protein
Vitamins
Minerals
Water

Hey! how's everybody doing on the challenge?
I picked up the South Beach Diet book last week and am reading thru it. It's also low carb but not as strict as Atkins and advocates lean meats (and less saturated fat).
Makes sense to me. For those of us that are insulin-resistant or pre-diabetic, low carb is the way to go. I had done Atkins for a while but once you get off, you just gain it all back.
So now I'm gonna treat it as a way of life - it has really helped get rid of my sugar cravings. I can pass up all the cookies and chocolate cake that I couldn't do without before!

Cool...
I'm trying to get rid of my mashed potato cravings!
I'm just starting it this week - but I think it sounds like a good plan also and treating it as a way of life is a good approach to it!
That way there's no going off the diet - maybe a little making up to do though sometimes!
Thanks for the reply...keep me posted on how it's going!

hmmmm..........interesting, not bizarre, but interesting.
Anywho, I am down a total of 6 so far. Sunday didn't help - with the 9 beers, 7 Captain & Cokes & a litany of high fat/high carb foods for game day. No more! Super Bowl Sunday has traditionally been the last "gut buster" day for me until Memorial Day.
By May 31st, I'll be down 30 total - 24 more to go.
By December 31st, I'll be down 62#. 57 more to go.
Well, you can indulge occasionally and then go back to "induction" (South Beach calls it Phase 1)
When I was doing Atkins I allowed myself once a month a carbo-day....ate anything I wanted. Then I would go back to square one and "detox" all the sugar out of my system for 3-4 days.
Gosh, I haven't had mashed potatoes in months! Don't even miss them anymore!

mashed potatoes are my favorite food....(one of them anyway - i think that's part of the problem!)
Congratulations on 6 - it's hard work! Feeling good?
I haven't gotten on a scale in almost 10 years - I'm just going by how difficult/easy it is to button my favorite jeans and purple cords! They're supposed to hang - right now they sit.
