I'm good with either way, but an online draft would be pretty hard, especially for anybody overseas.

Perhaps we could combine the two methods. Have an email draft for the first 5 picks or so, and then have a live draft for the rest of the picks to speed things up. That way if people miss the live draft, it won’t be as big of a deal.

I'm not sure if that is possible with their system.

For those in favor of the email draft, look at it this way:

Let's say for simplicity's sake, that the limit is only 6 hours a pick (I think that may not be enough, but for now, let's say ok). After 2 skipped picks, you would automatically be put on autopick (can be changed).

Now, let's assume that there is no autopicking and let's say that everyone takes their 6 hours to pick. 30 teams, 10 rounds, that's 300 picks in the draft, and with 6 hours per pick, that's 1800 hours to complete the draft, worst case. Divide that by 24 hours in a day (which doesn't include stopping the draft during sleeping hours), and it comes out to 75 DAYS.

BUT, on the flip side, you gotta think that several teams will be automatically put on Autopick, and if everyone is online a lot, then they won't take the whole allotment of time, and it will move faster.

Everyone loves live drafts, and I would prefer that as well, but in reality, it might not be a viable possibility with so many teams. If everyone wants to email me and let me know what kind of availability you have, then we can work around it, but it will be hard.

OR, we can get the last team claimed in the league (having technical issues), and then we can pretty much start the email draft as early as tomorrow.

A live draft would be tough, but an email draft would be HORRIBLE.

I'd much rather spend a few hours online than have to make sure that I check my email every 6 hours or so. (Sleep / work!) I dont care if I have to be up at 4:00am, it's still better than an email draft.

Plus, the idea of having half of my team auto picked just sucks.

The best thing to do is for everyone to give me your schedules (that you know of for the next few weeks). Please try to keep it a little open, it will be near impossible if you tell me, "October 1st between 11:30am and 12pm" and that's it.

I'll look at what I get and make the decision from there. I'd like to accomodate everyone, but that sadly will not happen in a league this big. Heck, I've seen the same problems in leagues half this size.

Another option is to use the message board as a means of doing the draft. It's sorta live, and you don't have to check your email all the time either. Each person would be assigned a time, at that time you are allowed to make your pick REGARDLESS if the person in front of you has made his pick.

If that person makes his pick before his time period (usually an hour) expires, then you can make yours right away without waiting for your scheduled time. This is a variation of the email and live drafts. If owners know they aren't going to be there at a certain time, they can give me their pick list and I can do it for them. Unfortunately, that puts a lot of stress on me, but it also helps because I can easily stop the draft starting at a certain time and restart the next morning, based on whatever schedule we come up with. So there would be no need to worry about your pick happening at 1am. Another advantage to this is that I can make other people's picks for them ahead of their scheduled time as well--assuming they are positive they cannot make their scheduled time.

Basically, there would be a single thread for each round, and each team would have a single post in each thread. By the end of the draft, there would be only 10 threads with around 30 posts in each.

Another advantage to this method is if I schedule the first overall pick for 9am on October 3rd, and that person is ready to pick on September 30th, they can go ahead and pick, then the #2 pick can pick anytime between then and the 10-11am period on October 3rd. After that, the #3 pick can choose their player and the draft continues. If no list is provided, skipped picks would continue to be skipped until they made their pick.

Personally, I still prefer the live draft, but I'm open to considering the above scenario (it's how I drafted in my keeper football league, but that only had 12 teams).

This sounds easier than an email draft, but also sounds like it would be a ton of work for you.

It's going to be hard to please everyone here. Why don't you set up a poll, list some 6 different time slots. Everyone has 2 votes. The time slots with the most votes will be the time for live draft. Those that can't make it to the live draft just have to set up the draft order for autodraft.

If I happened to be one of them (that could not make live draft), as I am living in NZ, then so be it. I will live with autodraft (and pray hard that LJ or Kobe or Amare will land in my team).

Whatever you choose, is good for me.

Having this site as "Draft Central" sounds good.

I hate "autopicks", but it will come in handy if someone takes too long to pick.

Any day of the week between 5am and 10am and sometimes between 2pm and 4pm.

I like the idea.

Message board or live is the two best ways to go. I can make time for it any time. I'd rather do it during the week, but Saturdays aren't bad either. As I PM'd you, the only time that will be tough is October 7th weekend as I will be in Phoenix for my sister's wedding and won't have a whol lot of chance to be online.

for some reason my home computor doesn't allow me to post on the board, so i'd have to email my pick to chap and then he could post it. but i like the idea of using the board for the draft. but weekends are gonna be difficult as most of us usually have plans (or is that just me?). during the week i have to think most of us are either on computors, check them routinely throughout the day, or are near regular access.

let's face it, we have 30 teams. 300 players to be drafted. this is going to be difficult.

I'm gravitating to a live draft starting at 9 or 10 PST on a Saturday morning. It also gives a chance for guys like Ollie who live in France to participate as well.

The message board thing is good in theory, except I have to decide if I want to dedicate the time to it. It not only posting draft orders, but filling out rosters manually on NBA.com. That will take quite a while with 30 teams. But I might be open to it.

If in plans you mean Passed out, hung over from drinking and going out Friday Night, then yes I have some big plans Saturday.

I'm with a draft on the Weekday, it seems like thats the time everyone is stuck on a Cpu at work or whatever, plus this Draft will fall into Sunday and pretty much half the people in this League, will be at the Game, the Bar or whatever getting hammered that Sunday for the Cards game.

If it's a live draft, i would expect it to last no more than a couple hours.

Live Draft - 90 seconds per pick, comes out to AT MOST 4 1/2 hours. And that with everyone picking and taking the full 90 seconds to make the pick. (no autopicking or people picking faster than 90 seconds)

damn! I didn't realize that the thread had been moved here till now. I kept waiting for the thread to get bumped with a post from Chaplin giving us an update and it didn't happen.

Only then I saw the "moved" prefix to the thread title.

Weekends are best for me.

Weekdays work too except that I will be relocating to NJ (from Dallas) late this week (Sep 27-30). Any other weekday, all times of the day are good for me.

I'll PM the same to Chap.

Note : btw, what kind of scoring do you plan to have in this league. I'm a fantasy league rookie but am aware of the systems that exist - rotisserie, head to head etc. Or does NBA.com have a certain fixed system.

Also, it would be great if people here could identify which teams they own. Kinda helps, since most posters here are familiar with each other.
