I got the first disc of season one the other day and watched the first episode. It was okay; I'll watch the second episode, but I probably won't get the other season one discs. I can live without it--I'd rather watch a movie, I think.
I just don't get why it's so hyped. And, I like Westerns (my wife liked it even less--she's not a fan of the genre--she's still in the "it was 'okay" category, but closer to not liking it than me).

To give this series a chance, you have to watch the first 4 episodes. After that, you're hooked.

I agree with Chaplin. You aren't going to dig the series as much until you watch several episodes. Like any new show it starts out kind of slow as the main plots and characters are introduced.

I like Real Sex, and Six Feet Under. On a sidenote, I can never get my wife to watch Real Sex with me. I'm think she's afraid I'll ask her to try something crazy off of the show.
I only recently got HBO so Rome is the only series I have watched. I really like it. I got my BA in history, so I obviously find it interesting from that standpoint, but the fictional characters are good too I think.
I really like the character of Vorenus and his conflictions concerning being in the legion and the strain it puts on his family. Also, his wife is smokin' hot!
Pullo is a very entertaining character and I think Octavian is very well written. His intelligence and understanding of politics make him very believable as the future Emperor Augustus.
The series is very good at portraying the Romans as they really were. There was no Judeo/Christian ethic yet, so all the violence, sex and slavery was just a fact of life to them. That is very interesting, I think.
People watched it (as much as Deadwood and Rome), but it cost $4 million PER EPISODE to make, THAT'S why they cancelled it. SO what do they do? Make Rome...
I guess they figured the sex and violence of Roman times would bring in more $.
