I thought we might have a thread on HDTV now that this is offically the television forum.
How many people here have HDTV? What is your favorite show to watch in HDTV?
We could even discuss digital television, the coming broadcast changes in 2007, or various HD television monitor technologies.
Any one interested?
Football in HDTV is great and they now show Monster Garage and American Chopper on Discovery HD. Beyond that I don't watch many sitcoms or primetime TV that makes up most of the current HD content.

We just bought a new tv recently and it's HDTV. But I have no idea what this all means, what the difference is. We have Dish Network, do we need to subscribe to something extra to get shows in HDTV? I'm a bit lost on this matter, but now that we have this big ass tv, might as well enjoy it, right? LOL!

I know it can be real confusing. I bought a HDTV about a year ago (A Panasonic like yours actually, but a 47") and started researching what it was all about.
What you have is a HDTV monitor. That is, a TV that is capable of displaying a higher resolution HD picture. What you would need now is a HDTV tuner commonly known as a Set Top Box (STB). There are quite a few choices available. Dish network has one, so does DirecTV. There is also a satellite provider called Voom that kind of specializes in HDTV and their stantard STB is an HDTV box.
Then there is OTA (or 'over the air') HDTV. These channels are local broadcasts just like you might get off of an old set of rabbit ears. The difference is these channels are digital instead of analog and this is the change that is coming in 2007 (supposedly). The analog channels the TV stations broadcast on now will no longer be used for television. To get OTA broadcasts now you need a digital tuner and an antenna (Some HDTV sets have digital tuners built in and only need a UHF antenna to get digital and HDTV).
Right now the whole thing is little bit of acronym hell and can be pretty involved and confusing.
Probably the biggest misconception is digital and HD are the same. HD has to do with the picture quality and the lines of resolution while digital is just a method of transmission. Digital broadcasting is great because there is no interference or lines, shadows, or fuzz in the picture. You either have a strong enough signal to get a perfectly clear picture of you have no picture at all.
Hope this all makes sense and you head has not exploded yet.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!! I totally get into computers and most technology, but HDTV is just over my head. Then again, I taught myself everything I know about the computer and other techie stuff, so I'm sure once I feel like figuring it out, I'll understand HDTV. Thank you for your helpful info! Gives me something to look into and research!

About all I watch is football on HDTV, although I have the package from DirecTV. Now, if they put the History Channel on HDTV, WOW!!! All those WWII pictures in HDTV? Nice!

The recent addition of FOX HD football broadcasts are really nice. Also since ESPN is now HD the highlights on Sportscenter and Primetime are in HD for those games in HD.
The other cool part is the surroud sound when you hear the crowd all around you while watching the game.
Does DirecTV show all the games in HD that are available that way? I thought I heard last season they only had one or two each week.
Of course with Fox now in HD there are a lot more games available that way this season.
We watch Monday night games at my friend's house on his projector and the OTA HD broadcast from ABC.

Our TV is HDTV ready but we don't have the box. Not enough programming in HDTV to warrant the extra money, me thinks.
I guess it depends on what and how much TV you watch.
There is more and more shows all the time.
I guess Voom has something like 32 HD channels.
The satellite boxes are really just way expensive. I think my friend did it the right way. He found an old open box unit for $250 and gets 7-8 free channels off the antenna mounted in his attic.
I only have 10 channels through Cox right now.
At least all the major networks are all broadcasting in digital. However most of the HD programing is the primetime network shows that I don't watch.

Can someone explain the whole 2007 thing, and whats gonna happen?
The FCC will mandate all television broadcasts be digital. The old NTSC standards (VHF/UHF channels) will go away.
You will still be able to use your current television (at the current resolution) but you will need a new ATSC (digital) tuner. But in reality you will probably be better off with a new TV with the digital tuner built in.
