That a McCain administration would essentially constitute W's 3rd term has been Obama's primary argument against McCain. Sure, it's catchy, and obviously some on this board have bought into the characterization (inevitably so, I guess).
I haven't actually seen the argument dissected, and thought it might be productive to do so (unless there are additional charges of sexual perversion or bad mothering yet to ponder).
This analysis presumes that Obama's votes in contravention of his campaign promises (i.e., FISA) are his actual positions. You can argue he really didn't want to vote that way, but by those votes he's stuck with them. Where McCain/Obama/W are essentially the same: FISA, Iraq, immigration policy, NAFTA, the death penalty.
Where Obama and W are essentially the same, and McCain is different: dialogue with Iran, intermingling of public and religious social services.
Where McCain and W are essentially the same, and Obama is different: tax policy, environmental policy, nomination of federal judges, abortion, health care, energy policy.
Where W differs significantly from both: gay marriage.
Obviously, there are nuances to consider, but I think that list is pretty fair. And, seems to dispel the notion that McCain would be W redux and an Obama administration dramatically different.

The positively HUGE one that is missing from your list and is what people are focusing on right now is government regulation. McCain and Bush are two peas in a pod on this and Obama is 180 degrees from them.
Where's health care? Where's privatization of services? Where's drilling? And lumping all 3 together as being the same on Iraq is not particularly accurate.
Lotsa other stuff left out, as well.

Where Ron Paul differs from everyone? Seperation of church and state; no taxes; bring all the troops home from everywhere; go to the gold standard and stop printing money
Wow we deserve what we get dont we.

I wonder if Ron Paul has been getting any more attention since Wall Street began melting down. I know I added his book to my Amazon wish list yesterday.
Does anyone besides me think that the "Obama and McCain are essentially the same on Iraq" isn't even close to being accurate.
Me. It's just simply wrong...

Good points, and I edited.
And on Iraq, someone's going to have to distinguish how they're different. The withdrawal of U.S. forces is being negotiated, and we'll pretty much be out within a few years regardless who's in office. That seems pretty much the same to me.

pssst... McCain = 100 years in Iraq... Be prepared Kolo....

Ah, so you're saying they are similar by default. Because now U.S. policy is coming around to Obama's viewpoint?
